Jesse's parents were William Ray and Elizabeth ?. He married Nellie Ellender (or Eleanor) Baker on 8 January 1782 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. He and Eleanor had 10 children, including Elizabeth Betsy (1782-1868), William (1784-1876), James (1786-1861), John W. (1789-1867), Nancy (1791-1889), Jeremiah (1793-1872), Larkin (1796-1834), Polly "Mary" (1798-1888), Hiram (1800-1866), and Jennie (1802-1865). Jesse served in several campaigns during the Revolutionary War which is well documented in historical records.
