About Clarence Bard
Background Information
Clarence was born on November 30th, 1920 to Samuel Bard and Mamie Bard. Clarence's father was from Austria, while his mother was a first generation American. Furthermore, he was a World War II veteran, the husband of Ruth Bard, and a father of three.
Adult Life
At the age of 19, Clarence enlisted in the United States Army; he subsequently became one of the first veterans to set foot on the beaches of Normandy and was awarded the bronze star for his service to the United States during World War II. Shortly after assimilating back into civilian life he met Ruth Bard: the woman with whom he would spend his life with.
Whilst starting a family, Clarence took on a job at a local golf course; however, the tragedy that would come as a result of Clarence taking this job forever changed his life. At some point between the late 1950's and the early 1960's, Clarence was hit in the head with a golf ball while working on the golf course, resulting in severe brain injuries. Ironically, the man who hit Clarence was a surgeon and was able to stabilize his body until the arrival of emergency services; even so, Clarence was put into a medically induced coma at the hospital as to protect him from further injury.
Despite, Clarence's aforementioned injury he led a life of comparable quality to those of his peers. He enjoyed biking, swimming, gardening, and most of all - spending time with his family. All in all, Clarence was a giving and compassionate man who made the best of unfortunate circumstances.
Death and Legacy
Although Clarence died on February 16th, 1998 at the age of 77, he was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Bard and his grandson Jonathan Argo. He was survived by his three children, 6 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
He is buried at Mount Ararat Cemetery in Lindenhurst, New York alongside his wife, parents, and siblings.
