About Charles Lindley Wood, 2nd Viscount Halifax
Charles Lindley Wood, 2nd Viscount Halifax of Monk Bretton was born on 7 June 1839 to The Rt Hon Charles Wood, 1st Viscount Halifx of Monk Bretton and Lady Mary Wood (née Grey). He married Lady Agnes Elizabeth Courtenay, daughter of The Rt Hon William Reginald Courtenay, 11th Earl of Devon and Lady Elizabeth Fortescue, on 22 April 1869. He died on 19 January 1934 at age 95 at Hickleton Hall in Yorkshire, England.
Charles was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England and Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1863 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). He also graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1865 with a Master of Art (M.A.). Lord Halifax held the office of Groom of the Bedchamber to HRH The Prince of Wales between 1862 and 1877. He was President of the English Church Union between 1866 and 1920. Charles gained the rank of Captain in the service of the 1st West Riding Yorkshire Yeomanry Cavalry. He was invested as a Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.) in 1880. Lord Halifax succeeded to the title of 4th Baronet Wood, of Barnsley, co. Yorks [G.B., 1784] on 8 August 1885, the title of 2nd Viscount Halifax of Monk Bretton, in the West Riding of the County of Yorkshire [U.K., 1866] on 8 August 1885. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of the West Riding, Yorkshire.'
