Charles was one of the early colonists of Quebec and was born around 1624 in Avremesnil, Normandie, France, He was a son of Francois Hamel and was married to two women over the course of his life. They were Judith Auvray and Catherine Lemaitre.

Together they had many children.

Charles passed away around 1721 in New France.
