ANOTHER DARING BURGLARY
During the night of Friday, the 17th instant, another daring burglary was committed on the premises of Mr Edward Eyers, general shopkeeper and publican, at Barton Stacey. As at the robbery at Mr Tarrants, the week previously, the villains broke a pane of glass and opened the window, thereby entering. In the shop all the drawers, cupboards and goods were ransacked, no doubt in search of money, but Mr Eyers had taken the wise precaution of removing what cash he had to his bedroom. They took away the best part of a side of bacon, some bread, groceries and tobacco, with which they got clear off. The thieves removed into the garden a jar of vinegar and a bottle of ink, both of which it is thought they believed contained something drinkable. Two brothers, named William and Charles batt, natives of the village, and living as carters to Mr William bridger, Chilcolm farm near Winchester, ten miles from hence, were seen leaving early in the morning, which excited suspicion. The police being informed of the fact, took steps to have them apprehended, when, on the person of William batt was found the identical watch stolen from Mr Tarrant's on the Thurday night previous; also, upon searching him, a wound was discovered on his right hand, which is supposed to have been done when breaking open the window. On further inquirey it was discovered that a new pair of trousers had been purchased by the other brother, Charles Batt, with part of the coppers stolen from Tarrant. The two men were therefore brought to Andover on Saturday for examination before the county magistrates, and remanded until Wednesday. It is strongly suspected they are the same party who committed the last robbery on Mr Eyere's premises. Thus two of a desperate gang have happily been detected.. The father of the Batts was transported for sheep stealing, at barton Stacey, nine years ago, and a brother sentenced to death for rape, which sentence was afterwards commuted to transportation. Several other desperate characters are suspected to be accomplices. On Wednesday, William and Charles Batt were brought before the county magistrates, and committed for trial at the next Winchester Session, first, for breaking into the premises of Mr Charles tarrant, barton Stacey, and stealing money, watch, etc as described in our previous report; and also with breaking into the shop of Mr Edward Eyeres, of barton Stacey, and stealing bacon and other articles, as before named.
