ALBEMARLE - Charles Thomas Barger, Jr., age 86, of Albemarle, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Spring Arbor Assisted Living, Albemarle, NC.

The family will receive friends at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle, on Thursday, March 28, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 8:00pm. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Jim Yow, will be held at Central United Methodist Church on Friday, March 29, 2013 at 2:00pm. Burial will be at a later date at Rowan Memorial Park. At other times, the family will meet at his home.

Mr. Barger was born on June 11, 1926, to the late Charles Thomas Barger, Sr. and the late Frances Lutz Barger in Charlotte, NC.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Julia Ann Hunt Barger of Albemarle; two sons, Chuck Barger of Charlotte, and Mark Barger and wife Kathy of Greenville, NC; a daughter, Cathy Shoemaker and husband David of Chapel Hill; four grandchildren, Tyler Shoemaker, Meredith Shoemaker, Andrew Barger, and Julia Barger; a brother, Jerry Barger of Salisbury.

Charlie attended Berryhill High School in Charlotte and graduated in 1943. He enlisted in the Navy ROTC and studied aviation electronics, continuing his education at NCSU earning a degree in chemical engineering. He worked for Alcoa Aluminum, Badin, NC, as a metallurgist for 32 years. After his career at Alcoa, he was a consultant in the aluminum industry traveling to numerous countries including South Korea, Russia, and various parts of South America.

A faithful member of Central UMC, Albemarle, NC, he was a Sunday School teacher, finance officer, and chef for the men's class breakfasts. He served on the school board for Albemarle City, on the board for Stanly County Community College, and participated in Lions Club and a local investment club. He loved making, growing, and fixing anything ranging from lawn mowers, to radios, to children, to prized tomatoes.

Above all, he loved spending time with his family whether at Cherry Grove Beach, the NC mountains, or simply at home.
