About Catherine Secord
- (Probably) not the same as Catherine Woertman (died young?)
- Not listed in the will of Dirck Janszen Woertman, of Brooklyn Ferry in 1694
- NOT dau. of Dirck Jans Woertman & Marritje NYSSEN or DENYSE per Workman family history by Thelma C. Anderson as THAT Catherine Woertman died young. See page 18. https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89062470125&seq=7
- Perhaps the daughter of Wynant Pieterszen van Ecke and Anneken Aukes (van Nuys) Waertman. Anneken Aukes was the 2nd wife of Dirk Woertman.
Daniel Secord was married to Catherine VOERTMAN* (daughter of VOERTMAN) about 1697. Catherine VOERTMAN* was born in 1677 (seen as 6 April 1677). She died in New Rochelle, NY.
Ambroise Secord Sr. died about 1712. He left behind his 5 children. His son Daniel married a Dutch woman by the name of Catherine Woertman and they had several children including Daniel Jr.
Family
1. DANIEL1 SICART was born in 1672 in LaRochelle,(Mornac?) France. He died in 1742 in New Rochelle, Westchester, New York, USA. He married CATHERINE WOERTMAN in 1696 in New Rochelle, NY. She was born in 1677.
Catherine Woertman was bp. ca. 1677 at Brooklyn, Kings County, N. Y. She was the daughter of Jan Derick Woertman and Merritje Teunise Denyse. [SIC: unconfirmed]
Marriage: 1696 New Rochelle, Westchester, New York. Daniel Sicard 1672–1742 and Catherine Woertman 1677–1725
Children:
- Daniel Sicard 1698–1742 • LK7Z-2WF
- Jacques James Sicard (Secor) Jr 1699–1773 • LKFJ-HH1
- Pierre Secord 1701–1767 • L831-LRC
- Ambroise Sicard 1703–1706 • LJK6-C6Y
- Paul Daniel Sicard 1704–1707 • LJK6-CB1
- Catherine Jean (Jayne) Secord (Sicord) 1704–1771 • LBW9-9D6
- Jean John Sicord 1707–1786 • L1QM-8H5
- Isaac Daniel Sicard 1710–1710 • LVLJ-FMF
It would appear, based on 1710 census, that Catherine may have died giving birth to Isaac?
GEDCOM Note
Catherine is the daughter of Direck Jansen and Marrietja Tennis Denyse W oertman, so she was born in Brooklyn, NY. No mention of where she may h ad died or buried, if in New Rochelle, mostly likely Old Town Cemeter o r on the old Sicard property.

Has any more information been developed on the mystery of Catherine Woertman?Recently encountered the Woertman family in another line, but also have Catherine in my Gerow line (through Benjamin, son of Daniel and Catherine (Sicard) Gerow or Giraud). My source is the Giraud-Gerow FAmily in America, Vol 1, 1981, put out by the Huguenot Historical Society, New Paltz.Where did the 1696 marriage date come from?

Why do you think that Catherine was not a Woertman? Was there something in the Secord notes you mention that leads you to believe that? Wasn't she the daughter of Jans Dirksen Woertman of Brooklyn Ferry?
There was an article written in the New York Historical Record in Jan 2001 on the subject of this family. Do you have access to New York journals?

David, the primary reason I discount Catherine, as wife of Daniel Sicard (Secord) is due to the fact I do not find a Catherine Woertman in that family.
I have indeed seen the article in NYG&B Record for Jan., 2001, and she is not listed in this article.I have always wondered if Daniel could have married a widow Woertman. He seems not to have married someone nee Woertman. Please let me know what you think, and thanks for your message, David.
Are you descended from Daniel & Catherine?
My descent from them is:
Daniel & Catherine - Daniel Gerow,
III - Deborah Gerow, wife of James Denton - James Denton,
Jr. - Thomas A. Denton - William Campbell Denton - Lora

Was interested to read in your post that you didn't think that Catherine Woertman married Daniel Secord because there was no Woertman family in the area. I found an old genealogy chart done by Peter Gerow saying that Daniel's wife was Catherine Frederick Waterbrooks. He wrote "She was an English lady."
Have not been able to find any further info on this. This document does question the prevailing view that his wife was Catherine Woertman.I am a member of the Gerow Family Association and have been in contact with you previously.

There is an extremely well researched and sourced series that has just concluded in the NYG&B Record covering the early Sicard/Secord family in America (beginning Volume 150 Issue 1 and ending Volume 151 Issue 3). In this the author argues that Catherine is not the daughter of Dirck Janse Woertman and Marritje (Theunisse) Teunis since she was not named in Dirck's will. She was assigned to these parents by previous researchers because she and Daniel Secord were sponsors for a child of Denyse Dirckse Woertman. The author suggests instead that she was not sister to Denys but rather a step-sister, and was in fact the daughter of Dirck's second wife Anneken Aukes and her first husband Wynant Pieterszen.
