Christian (MacLeod) MacLeod

Christian MacLeod was born about 1809 in Aird Tong, Parish of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland. She was the daughter of John MacLeod and Flora MacLeod. We see Christian living in Vatisker, Parish of Stornoway, Ross-Shire, Scotland on the 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 Censuses with her family: her husband William MacLeod in 1841, 1851, 1861 and with her son, John, in 1871. Her birth date is consistently placed around 1810 and in Ross-shire. The members of her families are crofters and fisherman by occupation.

Christian MacLeod married William MacLeod, son of Kenneth MacLeod and Catherine MacIver, on 19 November 1828. William was born about 1803 at Back, Parish of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland, and died 12 November 1869 in Vatisker, Parish of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland.

Children of William MacLeod and Christian MacLeod are:

• i Alexander MacLeod was born in May 1830 in Vatisker, Parish of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland, and died 12 January 1900 in Aird Tong, Parish of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland.
• ii Angus MacLeod was born in August 1833 in Vatisker, Parish of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland. (He may have married and left Lewis.)
• iii Kenneth MacLeod was born in September 1835 in Vatisker, Parish of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland and died 29 April 1911 in New Garrabost, Parish of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland.
• iv. Angus MacLeod was born in March 1838 in Vatisker, Parish of.Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland and died 10 November 1920 in Portvoller, Parish of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland.
• v. Catharine MacLeod was born in February 1840 in Vatisker, Parish of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland and died on 18 February 1855 in Vatisker, Parish of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland.
• vi. John MacLeod was born in 1842 in Vatisker, Parish of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland and died 25 April 1882 in Vatisker, Parish of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland.
• vii. William MacLeod was born in 1846 in Vatisker, Parish of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland. (He may have died young.)
• viii. Margaret MacLeod was born in 1848 in Vatisker, Parish of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland.

Disputed origins

The birth was not registered for Christian, nor have they found any probate records.

As of 25 June 2019, it does not seem possible to confirm her parents as Donald MacLeod & Margaret Cameron (that is, the same person as Christian MacLeod )

They were more likely to have been John MacLeod and Flora née MacLeod. They were added as her parents on 18 November 2024.

“No. 14 Aird Tong. John Macleod (also known as lain Caiptean) (1771-1853) was married to Flora Macleod. They were at Aird Tong as early as 1812. The family lived at 14 Aird Tong and consisted of three daughters and one son:

(a) "Chirsty (1809-1872). Married to William Macleod (Uilleam Choinnich) from Vatisker. Their son Alex was later at 25 Aird Tong and other members of the family were later in the Point area." [This Chirsty was also called Christian]
(b) Catherine (1810-1885) m. Angus Finlayson
(c) Donald (1816-1849) m. Catherine Maciver
(d) Catherine (again) (1812-1849) m. Kenneth Murray

Death: Christian (née MacLeod) MacLeod died at Vatisker, Parish of Stornoway, Ross-shire on 28 August 1872, aged 66 years. She was the widow of William MacLeod, Fisherman. Her parents were listed as John MacLeod, Crofter, (dec’d) and Flora (née MacLeod) MacLeod, (dec’d). The Informant was her Son, Angus. Per ScottishRoots:

No official record was made of the birth or baptism of Alexander MacLeod - the grandfather of Mary Anne MacLeod Trump) but, according to the ages shown for him in various sources, i.e. census returns, his marrage and death certificates, he would have been born in Stornoway around 1830. This was before the advent in Scotland of compulsory registration of these events in 1855. His death record reveals that both he and his father had been crofters and that each of his parents was also named MacLeod - William and Catherine.

NOTE: The information from Scottish Roots, cited above, is no longer accurate as:
1) Alexander MacLeod's baptism record has since been located and;
2) it has since been concluded that Alexander’s mother's name was Christian, not Catherine.
