- New England Families Genealogical and Memorial: Volume IV Pages 2104-2105 THORNTON John Thornton, the immigrant ancestor, was an early settler in Newport, Rhode Island, and in 1639 was in the employ of John Coggeshall, of that town. He was one of the twelve members of the First Baptist Church who founded the organization, October 12, 1648, but removed to Providence where he was living in 1679, and died 1695. In 1680 he served as deputy to the general assembly, and between 1683 and 1692 deeded his lands to his sons. Children: John, mentioned below, Thomas, Solomon, Elizabeth, Sarah, James, Benjamin, and William.
