About Captain John Drury Stith, II
Capt. JOHN STITH (John) had patents, 29th April, 1692, for 470 1/2 acres in Charles City County made out to "Capt. John Stith, Jr. (Va. Land Patents, Book 8, p. 240) and (of same date) for 595 acres on the south side of Chickahominy River, in James City County (ib., p. 237), addressed to "John Stith, Jr. " 21st April, 1695, "Capt. John Stith" had a patent for 595 acres on the south side of Chickahominy River (ib., p. 110), probably a confirmation of the preceding patent issued 29th April, 1692. Capt. Stith was High Sheriff of Charles City County in 1691 (Palmer's Calendar, I., 27), and he was a Burgess for the county 1692-1693 (Col. Va. Register). The date of his death is uncertain. He was living in 1714 (W. & M. QUARTERLY. V., 178) and, according to the statement of the Rev. Hugh Jones, he died before 1724, when his widow was matron at William and Mary College.
Capt. John Stith married Mary, daughter of Col. William Randolph of Turkey Island, and Mary (Islam) his wife, and they had issue. (See Genealogical Charts.)

The son of Major John Stith and 2nd wife, Jane Mosby (Gregory) (Parsons) Stith, his father a Major in the Charles City militia, a practicing lawyer, magistrate of Charles City, Virginia and representative in the Virginia House of Burgesses. John and Jane were the progenitors of the Stith lineage in America.
John Drury Stith, was born about 1658 in Charles Cittie Shire (sic), one of the first four "boroughs" in the royal colony of Virginia, the eldest son of Major Stith. He held offices as High Sheriff of Charles City County in 1691, county Representative in the Virginia House of Burgesses 1692-1693 (Colonial Virginia Register), held patents for large tracts of land on the south side of the Chickahominy River along with a large estate and mill bequeathed him by his father in 1694. He married Mary Isham Randolph, daughter of the prominent Colonel William Randolph and Mary Royall Isham of Turkey Island. John and Mary had at least the following children; Lieut. Colonel John Stith whom married Elizabeth Anderson, Mary Stith became the wife of Reverend William Dawson of Queen's College Oxford, and Reverend William Stith, became President of William and Mary College.
John died while his widow was still matron of William and Mary College. And, while the dates entered are approximate, they are as close to accurate as can be based on historical data available. The Vital Records of the era were destroyed at the burning of Jamestown during Bacon's Rebellion, an uprising of Virginia farmers led by Nathaniel Bacon against the colonial officials, where John, a Captain in the Continental Militia, was actively engaged. This event left the exact dates and place of birth, death and burials of many of its citizens unknown.
