Research notes
Born about 1622. A prior version of this profile reported John was born "3 Mar 1616 at St Johns, Somerset, England." There is a baptismal entry so dated at St. John's, Glastonbury, and this date is often given as his baptism--for example, FamilySearch Family Tree (PID LC9J-6LT) and FindAGrave (memorial 60336123). However, a review of that record finds the gender is more likely a female (a "filia"), the parent's given name is unlikely George; the surname is unlikely Rayment or Raymond. See the restricted access record in "Parish Registers for St. John's Church, Glastonbury, 1603-1900"; images, FamilySearch (FHL film 1,526,630, DGS 4,021,891 (image 1632 of 2362). A snippet of the parish record has been uploaded to St. John's 3 March 1615/6 Snippet. No other baptismal record has been identified about John Rayment. According to George Lansing Raymond, "All the [St. John's] records are missing between about 1621 and 1653."[63]
Despite this vital record, John Rayment testified three times in court as to his age. First in 1660, he was about age 38 (EQC 2:219). In 1680, he was about at 60 (EQC 8:7), and 1682, he was again about age 60 (EQC 8:323).
Recent published reference to John Rayment's birth is found in David Curtis Dearborn and John Bradley Arthaud, "William1 Woodbury of Salem and Beverly, Massachusetts," New England Historical and Genealogical Register, 175 (2021):207-222, at 215. These authors reported John was born "about 1622," citing "Ferris, Dawes-Gates ... , 2:697-699."
