About Captain Carew Reynell
[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reynell_(surname)]
The original holder of the custody of the Castle at Exeter was William Renal, Richard's father, although he is conveniently passed over in most narratives. (Wm. Pole, Collections Towards a Description of the County of Devon, book II, page 40.
The castle is actually named "Rougemont Castle" because of the red rock used to build it, not much of it remains.
Will. Renal is most likely a Norman, a son of one of the companions of William the Conqueror. He would be of French and Danish (Viking) descent.
There is no connection between the Reynell family of Devon and other parts of England descended from this William and the Reynel family of Reynel, France.
