This theory will no doubt cause some consternation among Ballard family researchers who are settled in their often repeated conclusion that the progenitor of the Lineage Group I Ballards (and Lineage Group III (being unrelated genetically), which in and of itself raises doubts about the veracity of those lines) is the William Ballard who married Philadelphia _________ and resided in Essex County, Virginia, and that William in turn (according to some researchers) being the son of the illustrious Thomas Ballard of James City County, Virginia (1630-1690). Thomas Ballard of James City County did have a son William, but we believe William lived (and died) in Charles City County. We are indebted to researcher Dennis Stewart for bringing many of these records — and this compelling theory — to our attention.
Research Notes

Because of the advent of DNA testing, two groups of Ballard descendants claim descent from Thomas Ballard of James City County. From what we know of y-DNA testing, this is not possible; it could be one or the other, but definitely not both. Or neither. All of the genealogies that assert a connection claim descent from William Ballard and Philadelphia. Based on the evidence presented, it is not believed that this William is the son of Thomas Ballard; rather, the records show (and sadly, there are very few) that William Ballard, son of Thomas of James City County, lived and died in that part of Charles City County that was once part of James City County. Therefore, it follows that the listing of children is flawed as well, due to no acceptable documents or sources being presented for this William.
It is not yet documented that their daughter was the Alice who married John Stanley.
From Vince B Ballard to John Ballard: There is no estate listed for William and Philadelphia Ballard at all. This list of children for them was made up by someone. I have never found any thing with this connection listing these children. There were other Ballards listed in Essex county. John, Richard, Ambrose William, and Thomas is what I remember.
This list of children was established after years of research from many genealogists. They are tied together through records in the area where they lived, Quakers records, naming pattern of children, travel records and county boundary records. No, there is not an estate for William and Philadelphia Ballard and given the extensive destruction in that area during Civil War there may never be records found. Sometimes the proof is not in one sheet of paper but in the combination of many little tidbits of paper collected over years of research. I have been researching for 25 years and many of the others who worked on this list were researching longer than I. I am sure that we would welcome you to take any one of the list and work your way through Virginia records and prove without a doubt that they belong to another parent. And wish you the best luck in doing it. We all want to be proven right or corrected in our work. By the way, here is my list of children: Richard b @ 1697, Bland b @1700, Thomas b @ 1702, Philip b@ 1704, Alice b@ 1708, William b 8 Sept 1715, Philadelphia b 1718, and John b 1720. 20 Mar 2000
From Lineage Group I: Thomas Ballard of Stafford County, Virginia (c. 1679-c. 1722).
William Ballard of Essex County is believed to have died between 1741, when he last appeared in a court record,2 and 1753, when his widow, Philadelphia, conveyed her dower interest in a tract of land in Essex County.3
William Ballard of Essex County is believed to have married Philadelphia ___________, who was living about 17514 and as late as 2 October 1754 in St. Anne’s Parish, Essex County, Virginia, when an indenture was recorded on 2 October 1754 conveying Philadelphia’s dower interest in land to John Lee of Essex county, her son John Ballard having sold the land to John Noell on 19 January 1747,5 who had in turn sold the land to John Lee.6

William [BALLARD], a minor on 26 September 1706; Cabell simply notes that "he seems to have died unmarried." William Ballard died in York county before 21 September 1719, for on that date "Robert Ballard came into Court and made oath that William Ballard departed this life without making any will so far as he knows or believes. Said Robert Ballard gave bond with Philip Lightfoot & John Gibbon his security and was appointed administrator of the Estate of the said William Ballard decd." We know this William Ballard died without issue when his estate is presented in court by Thomas Vines, Edwd Baptist, Walter Butler and Robert Ballard, and consists solely of "a Negroe girle of about 19 years old which we value to 30 pd." No provision was made for a wife or orphans

William Ballard, born ca. 1674, was the son of Colonel Thomas Ballard and Anne Thomas. An excellent genealogy on the Ballards is "Intrepid Ballards" by Miriam Kathryn Ballard-Pringle (3rd Edition, 1995, LOC# 88-346950). There is a copy at the DAR Library in Washington, DC. However, primary source documents (birth and death records, wills, etc.) conclusively showing William as the son of Col. Ballard are lacking. William was probably born at Middle Plantation in what is now Williamsburg, and on the grounds of what is now William and Mary College. Col. Thomas Ballard and his wife Anne Thomas were members of Bruton Parish Church, but early records were destroyed by fire. Thus, baptismal records that might have shown William as Thomas's son do not exist.
Strong supporting documents, however, do exist. There is a biography of Colonel Thomas Ballard in the "Dictionary of Virginia Biography" Volume 1, compiled by the Library of Virginia in Richmond in 1998. This biography states that Thomas Ballard had 4 sons and 4 daughters by his first wife Anne Thomas. His son Thomas, who married Katherine Hubbard, is well known and well documented. Other children are documented in the will of Robert Baldry, of York County, dated 1 May 1668, naming children of Thomas Ballard: sons Thomas and John and daughters Lydia, Elizabeth and Martha. It does not name sons William and Francis, who were born after this will was written. It also does not identify a fourth daughter.
However, in a footnote in the biography mentioned above, it states, "...family members [are]identified in York Co. Deeds, Orders and Wills, 3:124, 171, 5:147, 9:40, 73 and Surry Co. Deeds, Wills, Etc. 1:237, 288." Of these, in Book No. 9, York County, Virginia Deeds, Orders, Wills, Etc. 1691-1694, on page 40, it states that for "a Court held 24 July 1691, An order against Mr. Tho: Barbar, High Sherriff, is granted Mr. Thomas Ballard assign Alice Ballard executrix of Coll. Tho: Ballard." This Thomas was the son of Col. Thomas. Then, on page 73, "At a Court held 24 November 1691, ...Mr. William Ballard assignee of Benjamin Goodrich attorny of Mrs. Alice Ballard executrix of Coll. Thomas Ballard..." These court documents show that a known son of Col. Thomas Ballard was an assignee to Alice Ballard, second wife of Col. Thomas Ballard, and that William Ballard was also an assignee for the same person. It is fairly likely that only a very close relative, such as a son, would be named an assignee for their father's widow. These court records provide strong evidence that William was also a son of Col. Thomas Ballard.
William Ballard is further shown to be a son of Col. Thomas Ballard and Ann Thomas in "The Majors and Their Marriages" by James Branch Cabell, W.C. Hill Printing Co., Richmond, VA, 1915, page 101. This source is specifically mentioned in another well-respected document, "The Edward Pleasants Valentine Papers", Vol. 1, Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1979, p. 157, where it states in a footnote, "For a well prepared genealogy of the earlier generations of the Ballard Family of York County, see "The Majors and Their Marriages" by James Branch Cabell.
The above documentation was sufficiently strong and convincing, although circumstantial and not from a primary source (birth or death records, wills, etc.), to satisfy the Genealogist of the Jamestowne Society that William Ballard was the son of Colonel Thomas Ballard. It is by descent from Col. Thomas Ballard, through his son William, that my wife was accepted into the Jamestowne Society.
