Biography

Private Benjamin Pattee served with Suffolk County Militia, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.

Benjamin Pattee was born on 13 April 1724 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts. He married Abigail Emerson on 28 Aug 1744 in Haverhill. She was likely the daughter of John Emerson, Jr. and Abigail Stevens but may have been the daughter of Robert and Abigail (Bond) (Ordway) Emerson. If she was the daughter of John Jr., she was born 13 May 1726 in Haverhill.

In the summer of 1748, Benjamin was on military duty as a sentinel in York County, now Maine. While there, he got to know Catherine Kilgore and nine months later was sued by Catherine and her father. At a church meeting on 18 February 1774 the brethren accused Abigail of having been "overtaken with strong liquor, & chargeable with a wanton use of the tongue." Although required to attend this meeting, Abigail refused, "pleading yt her Husband will by no Means give his Consent to it yt he threatens her with grievous Abuses if she should attend contrary to his Will at which circumstance we cannot but express our sorrow & real Concern for her as being yoked with an unbeliever." The brethren decided to dismiss the matter, cautioning her to "mortify every corrupt Appetite & passion ... & bring it into subjugation to ye Laws of God". Benjamin Pettee of Haverhill was a private in Capt. Timothy Eaton's Co., Col. Edward Wigglesworth's Regt. in 1776. Benjamin died in Haverhill between 1790 and 1800. Abigail died after 1800.

Research notes

According to the NEHGS Register from 1992, there may have been two women in the area with the name Abigail Emerson. The two connected here were married on August 28th, 1744. Abigail was identified as the daughter of Robert Emerson and Abigail Bond in the book, The Haverhill Emersons. However, it may be likely that she was born in Haverhill on May 13th, 1726 to John Emerson Jr and Abigail (Stevens) Emerson. While Robert Emerson and John Emerson were in the West Parish of Haverhill, they were in different parts of the town. It is possible they married two women with the same name.

See Abigail Emerson for details.
