About Aubrey Conroy Brough
My father Aubrey Brough was born in Te Kūiti and for the greater part of his life lived and farmed in Aria. He was widowed aged 45, with three children. He was a hard worker having spent his younger years shearing and breaking in his King Country hill farm with time out to go pig hunting, duck shooting, fishing and travel. In the early 1970s he moved to a semi-retirement farm in Turua. He enjoyed many overseas trips including several All Black supporter tours. South Africa was a favourite country and there he made many friends and experienced several safari hunts. I enjoyed several overseas trips with him. He was generous, caring and considerate and a great travel companion. He was often referred to as “One of Nature’s Gentlemen”. In recent years I was fortunate to visit Antarctica, fly around Mt Erebus and complete the journey he was robbed of. On the morning of 28 November 1979, Air New Zealand Flight TE901 left Mangere airport, Auckland, for an 11-hour return sightseeing flight to Antarctica. At 12.49 p.m. (NZST), the aircraft crashed into the lower slopes of Mt Erebus killing all 237 passengers and 20 crew on board. It was the worst civil disaster in New Zealand's history.
