Onfroi de Vieilles - alias Vetulis or Vaux, lord of Vieilles, a small commune in the canton of Beaumont, arrondissement of Bernay; a centre of Crispin family influence, and of Vaux-sur-Seine, canton Meulan. Onfroi married Auberée de la Haye, obit. 28/12/1045. Her family bore three bunches of quickset, signifying a connection the Thorn Clan of Helgi, whose emblem was a thorny hedge [Martin de Albuquerque, ed. Notes and Queries, p. 413, 1861]. They had three sons: [1] 'Rodbertus de Bellomonte, filius Unfredi.' [2] Guillaume de Bellomonte, who gave to Saint-Léger de Préaux la forêt de Beaumont. [3] Roger de Beaumont, alias Belomonte, Baron de Beaumesnil, who married Adeline, sister of Huges II., Comte de Meulan* [La Roque, Hist. de la M. d'Harcourt. T. III.. p. xxv.]. Roger became a monk at St. Pierre de Préaux, which was founded by his father on his own domains, which became known as Beaumont-le-Roger. This abbey was in the diocese of Lisieux, caput of the Crispin family. The land was gifted to Humphrey de Vieilles by his brother, Ralph, in his capacity of administrator of Bernay Abbey, at the behest of the ducal family, who wished to secure his support. The fief of Neuborg was obtained in the same manner [L. F. Dubois, Histoire de Lisieux, p. 53, 1845]. Humphrey de Vieilles remained loyal to the young Duke William, and, as a consequence, in 1036, had his estates plundered by those opposed to his succession, led by Roger de Toeni, descendant of Malahule. A force led by Roger de Beaumont drove the attackers back, slaying Roger de Tosni and two of his sons. Land in Bailleul-en-Vimeu was among the many endowments that Humphrey de Vieilles invested on the abbey, as evidenced by its cartulary, c. 1050. The topographical name Beaumont was first mentioned in an act of the Abbey of St. Martin de Tours, 855, as Bellus Mons, that is, the high ground to the south of Bailleul-en-Vimeu, part of the Château Coquerel Estate. 'Coquerel is on a hill overlooking the plain Flavy-le-Martel, and is bound by a series of ridges separating the valleys of the Oise and the Somme. This hill was obviously fortified, because it is still surrounded by two deep ditches. The mound was opened, it is said, by the Templars, to search for what can not be known. For those of us who have visited and explored several times, the Coquerel tumulus is not a Celtic, but a Gallic fortress, which occupied an important strategic position' [Soci%C3%A9t%C3%A9 Française d'Archéologie, p. 370, 1861]. A possible connection between the family of Onfroi and this region is also suggested by L'église de Lieur, arrond. Pont-Audemer, receiving tithes from the feudal manors of les Préaux, Coquerel, and Bailleuil.

Cawley Medieval Lands Database gives 4 children and unknown parentage for Aubrey.
HONFROI de Vieilles (-after [1040], bur Préaux, monastery of Saint-Pierre). He is named as son of Thorold by Orderic Vitalis[2645]. Seigneur de Vieilles et de Pont-Audemer, in Normandy. The Genealogia Fundatoris of Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire names ”Humfridum de Vetulis” as son of “Turulpho de Ponte-Adomaro” & his wife[2646]. He witnessed charters under Robert I Duke of Normandy. He founded the monasteries of Saint-Pierre before 1035 and Saint-Leger in [1040], both at Préaux, near Pont-Audemer2645. "…Humfridus constructor eiusdem loci cum filiis suis Rogerio, Roberto, Willelmo…" are named as present in the charter dated 1035 under which "Willelmus adhuc puerulus…Roberti comitis filius" donated "Turstini villa" to the abbey of Préaux[2647]. Guillaume de Jumièges records that "Roger du Ternois" [Tosny] fought "Honfroi de Vaux" during his rebellion against Guillaume II Duke of Normandy during the early years of the latter's reign[2648]. He became a monk at the former before he died[2649].
m AUBREY, daughter of ---. Robert of Torigny records that "Hunfridus de Vetulis, pater Rogerii de Bello Monte, et Albereda uxor eius" founded two monasteries, one for men the other for women, in "fundo Pratelli"[2650]. Honfroi & his wife had four children:
i) ROGER de Vieilles (-29 Nov 1094, bur Préaux, monastery of Saint-Pierre). "…Humfridus constructor eiusdem loci cum filiis suis Rogerio, Roberto, Willelmo…" are named as present in the charter dated 1035 under which "Willelmus adhuc puerulus…Roberti comitis filius" donated "Turstini villa" to the abbey of Préaux[2651]. Guillaume de Jumièges records that "Honfroi de Vaux" sent his son "Roger de Beaumont" to fight "Roger du Ternois" [Tosny] during the latter's rebellion against Guillaume II Duke of Normandy during the early years of the duke's reign[2652].
- COMTES de MEULAN.
ii) ROBERT de Vieilles (-after 1066, bur Préaux, monastery of Saint-Pierre2656). "…Humfridus constructor eiusdem loci cum filiis suis Rogerio, Roberto, Willelmo…" are named as present in the charter dated 1035 under which "Willelmus adhuc puerulus…Roberti comitis filius" donated "Turstini villa" to the abbey of Préaux[2653]. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records the proposed marriage of "Robertus comes Mellentinus" and the daughter of "Hugonis Crispeiensis comes" which was prohibited by "Yvo [episcopus]" on grounds of consanguinity, the mutual descent of the two parties from "Gauterus Albus de Albamarla" being set out in the chronicle[2654]. William I King of England gave him land in the Cotentin[2655]. He was killed by Roger de Clères according to Orderic Vitalis, who specifies that he was the son of Honfroi de Vieilles[2656].
iii) GUILLAUME de Vieilles . "…Humfridus constructor eiusdem loci cum filiis suis Rogerio, Roberto, Willelmo…" are named as present in the charter dated 1035 under which "Willelmus adhuc puerulus…Roberti comitis filius" donated "Turstini villa" to the abbey of Préaux[2657].
iv) DUNELME de Vieilles . The primary source which confirms her parentage and marriage has not yet been identified. Her daughter became a nun at Saint-Leger de Préaux[2658]. m ---.

Forêt de Brotonne
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The forêt de Brotonne (Brotonne forest), in France, is situated to the west of Rouen in a vast meander of the Seine, accessible by the pont de Brotonne. It is a part of the Parc naturel régional des Boucles de la Seine normande (Regional natural parc of Boucles de la Seine normande), which allows for the safeguarding of a large natural space stretching from the banlieue of Rouen to the commune of Marais-Vernier.
Pont de Brotonne linking Rouen to the Forêt de Brotonne Today the forest encompasses an area 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) in length and 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) in width, and is divided by multiple forest roads. It contains more than ninety species of trees, notably oaks and beech. The state-owned section covers more than 6,700 hectares (17,000 acres) (out of a total 7,200 hectares (18,000 acres)). The forest is one of the largest beech forests in France, with 62% of its area of its surface covered in beech. In addition to beech and oaks, the forest also contains Scots Pines and Hornbeams. In addition to the trees, the forest also contains a windmill (the moulin-tour de Hauville) and a communal cottage (four à pain) of La Haye-De-Routot. The forest's western edge is bordered by the A131 autoroute.
[edit] History
During the Ancient Roman period, the remainder of the primary forests were cleared (as deforestation had already most likely begun during the Neolithic Period in order to build large domains consisting of several farms a linked to new cities which were growing along the banks of the Seine, along with a new palace named le palais d'Arelaune. Some of the houses constructed during this period measured up to 150 metres (160 yd) long and 80 metres (87 yd) wide and were elegantly decorated.
At the entrance of the forest on the other side of the Seine, the Fontenelle Abbey was constructed during the reign of Clovis II, which marked the beginning of evangelicalism in the area. Later, during the reign of Thierry III, Condède, a Breton recluse saint moved to an island by the forest where he lived for fifteen years, attracting a number of pilgrims who continued to come even after his death to visit his tomb.
