About Arthur Edward Astill
Arthur Astill, a 16 year old labourer from Orange in central west NSW, was photographed at Dubbo Gaol on 24 January 1893 while awaiting trial for murder. He was tried at Dubbo Circuit Court on 11 April 1893 for the murder of Jessie Hamling, who was found dead at her home on 9 January 1893. The youth had been apprenticed as a general hand to William Hamling, Jessie's husband, who was a selector with land at Coalbaggie Creek near Dubbo. Astill first told police that he found the woman’s body outside the back door of the Hamling farm house after he returned from fixing a water tank... An inquest found that Mrs Hamling had died from a gunshot wound. Source: Museums of History NSW.
Astill was accused of her murder. The Coronor found insufficient evidence that it was murder - believing it instead of being an accident. Each of the news articles has slightly different additional information, therefore all items are useful in building a fuller picture of the events. Despite the Coronor's findings Astill was arrested again and charged with murder and held at Dubbo Gaol... Astill is found not guilty of murder and finally released from custody. Source: Trove.
