Biography
Anthony Thysen Swaim was born in September 1659 in Leerdam, Utrecht, Holland. He was the third child of Thys Barentsen and Sytie Cornelius. He had an older and a younger brother and an older sister. His Father was 38 when he was born and his Mother was 23. His parents immigrated to the United States and lived on Staten Island, New York. Anthony married Neeltje Jansz around 1681. They probably were the parents of the following children: Albert, Elizabeth, Hannah, Jacobus, Mary, Matthys, Rachel, Johannes 1682, Cornelius 1685, and Leah 1702.
The Staten Island Census of 1706, shows: "Anthony, age 49 . . . living on the Southside, . . . his wife Eleanor (Nelltje) daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Ann, Rachel and Ledy, sons Cornelius (over 21) and Albert, Matthew, and Jacob.
Anthony died in March 1719 on Staten Island, New York. Neeltje was left a widow. She lived for another 8 years. She died in 1727 on Staten Island. There are no records that she remarried.
Anthony left a will. In it he is listed as living in Richmond County, New York and was a yeoman.
His will left: --
- Five pounds to Johannes - his oldest living son and his "heir in law" --
- Neeltje was left "all of real and personal estate during her natural life or widowhood" --
- Daughter Elizabeth received 50 pounds above the amount given to the other children --
- Grandson Thomas Wentworth 25 pounds --
- Daughters Elizabeth, Hannah, Mary, Rachel and Leah 30 pounds --
- Sons Johannes, Matthusz, Jacobus - Equal percentages of the rest of the estate --
- To Cornelius - if he returns - a like portion to other sons
Neeltje was the executrix of the estate. Anthony signed the will with a mark of "A". His will was proved on March 10, 1719. I

SWAIM FAMILY
"The Swaim family emigrated to America from Holland although many believe they were not of Dutch stock, but were English Pilgrims sojourning in Holland. The earliest record is of ANTHONY SWAIM, who came over from Holland in 1700 and settled on Staten Island in New York. From an old record we learn that he had four sons and his wife was a Huguenot lady.
- 1. Michael Swaim, who remained on Staten Island and whose descendents now live "up the Hudson."
- 2. Mathias Swaim, who moved to Essex County, New Jersey.
- 3. WILLIAM SWAIM, who moved to Surrey County, North Carolina.
- 4. 'Unknown' Swaim, who moved to Princeton, N.J.
Comments: (Interesting read, but a little dated. More recently discovered documentation proves Yoder to have been combining facts from 4-5 different family groups. He was neither complete, or 100% accurate in his assertions.)
