Anthony Holladay was the first of this family in Isle of Wight. On the 8th of February, 1671, Arthur Skinner sold to Thomas Pitt the plantation where he (Arthur Skinner) then lived, being one half of 500 acres formerly in the tenure of Thomas Butler and now of Arthur Skinner and Anthony Holladay. The 9th of December 1671, Anthony Holladay bought 100 acres from James Valentine, "said land was to be joined to his own which was lately in the tenure of John Brewer, deceased." John Brewer was a stepson of Thomas Butler. Anthony Holladay was a member of the County Court, 1694 to 1702 and was a Burgess in 1693-95. He married Anne, the widow of John Brewer, and died in 1718. His sons were Joseph and Samuel who predeceased him, and Jonas who died in Norfolk County in 1718 without issue. Joseph was the father of Anthony and John Holladay. This Anthony married Easter, daughter or Richard Wilkinson. Samuel who died in 1716 was the father of Anthony Covington Holladay who witnessed Mary Marshall's will in 1732. Anthony Holladay, the Burgess, also had two daughters, Mary who married James Knott of Nansemond, and Sarah who married William Murphrey. James Knott, Sr., aged 23, came over on the George and settled in Accomac in 1617. He owned land there in 1632 and he and his wife Elinor sold this land June 11, 1634 (Order Bk., 1, Folio 37, Northampton). March 24, 1635, James Knott patented 1200 acres in Nansemond for the transportation of himself, wife Elinor and 21 other persons (Cavaliers & Pioneers, p. 37). James Knott was probably one of those Puritans who joined in the trek to Maryland for he patented land there in 1652 but died soon afterwards. As "James Knott of Nansemond" he made his will there September 4, 1651, and same was probated 13 May, 1653. He mentioned three sons in his will, but did not mention Francis or James. The records of St. Mary's County show that he conveyed land to his son Francis before his death. Probably on leaving Nansemond he likewise conveyed land to James, for the Quit Rent Rolls of Nansemond show that James was holding 1650 acres there in 1704 which was proably the same land James, Sr., was granted in 1635. Descendants of James, Jr., moved to North Carolina. William Murphry, who married Sarah Holladay, made his will in 1621. He left several sons. (See will.) His daughter Catherine married a Bryan; daughter Elinor married William Kirle who died in 1720; daughter Margaret married John Lawrence who made his will in 1739. Margaret Murphry-Lawrence made her will in 1750. A son Michael Murphry made his will in 1747 and one of his children, Elizabeth, married Thomas Dixon, Jr.
