Origins

Another possible addition to data available from Amsterdam on the family of Auke Jans van Nuys may be the baptism of Auke's daughter Annetje, who was married in the colonies in December 1661, and recorded as having been born in Amsterdam:

1661, December 4:

  • Wijnant Pieterzen, "from Eck in the Betuwe"
  • to Anneken Auckens, "from Amsterd[am]";
  • Witnesses: Aucke Jans, father of the bride, Jan
  • Jacobszen van Rheenen [of Rhenen]

"Old Dutch Manuscripts: Old First Dutch Reformed Church of Brooklyn, New York. First Book of Records, 1660-1752" (The Genealogical Publishing Company , Baltimore, MD, 1983), p. 212]

Since December 1661 is only a little more than 16 ½ years after Auke's marriage, this Annetje should be his oldest child. No Annetje, daughter of Auke Jans and Magdalena Pieters turned up in the Amsterdam baptisms index, but the baptism of Annetje, a daughter of Albert Jans and Magdalena Jans, was recorded on 28 January 1646 [SAA DTB 42, p.481]. This record, viewed as a pdf image of the original book, is neatly written, and the names are very clear. Normally I would dismiss a record with the father's name so different from the name of my subject, except in this case, the baptismal witness was a Saertje Jacobs, which is the same name as the wife of Benning Wyma, who was the uncle and also the father-in-law of Goosen Jans van Nuys. Sara Jacobs had married Benning Wyma in 1639 [SAA DTB 43, p.21], and participated in the baptisms of two daughters of Andrea Bennings, a sister of Goosen's second wife Rachel, in the 1640's. Sara died about 1653.

To be sure there was not another family consisting of an Albert Jans and wife Magdalena, I searched Amsterdam baptisms between 1640 and 1660 for the same couple. In that period only one child was born to an Albert (or Elbert) Jans* and any Magdalena, and that child was the Annetje above mentioned. Thus I reluctantly hypothesize this child as the first child of Auke Jans and Magdalena Pieters. If this is so, the recorder had the father's first name clearly wrong, and in the mother's surname, the father's patronym was mistakenly used.

There is an extremely well researched and sourced series that has just concluded in the NYG&B Record covering the early Sicard/Secord family in America (beginning Volume 150 Issue 1 and ending Volume 151 Issue 3). In this the author argues that Catherine is not the daughter of Dirck Janse Woertman and Marritje (Theunisse) Teunis since she was not named in Dirck's will. She was assigned to these parents by previous researchers because she and Daniel Secord were sponsors for a child of Denys Dircksen Woertman. The author suggests instead that she was not sister to Denys but rather a step-sister, and was in fact the daughter of Dirck's second wife Anneken Aukes and her first husband Wynant Pieterszen.

Origins

AUCKE JANSEN VAN NUYSE

MAGDALENA PIETERSE

In December 1666 Aucke married as his second wife and as her third husband ELIZABETH JANSE, the widow of Christopher Schaets and Jan Claesen. Prior to 17 July 1681, prob. on Long Island, NY, Aucke married as his third wife and as her second husband GEERTJE GYSBRECHTS, widow of Jan Jacobszen Van Rheenen.

Aucke emigrated to America from Amsterdam in 1651. He was a carpenter, residing at first in New Amsterdam, where on 6 May 1653 he sold his house and lot to Hendrick Hendricksen. In 1661 he resided at Brooklyn Ferry; in 1665 in Flatlands, and in 1669 in Flatbush, where he had built the church in 1654 and 1660. He was appointed schepen in 1673 under Governor Clove, and took the oath of allegiance in 1687. He was living in New Utrecht in 1675, where his name appears on the assessment roll for that year. On 15 October 1681, he bought of Bartel Claesen hishouse and farm in Flatbush of 19 morgens; also Claesen's share of theland lying at the Paerde Gat, patented by Governor Andro on 17 March1677 to said Claesen and Louis Jansen. He also purchased 10 morgens on the plains of "Amersfoort," which Claesen bought of Samuel Spicer; andalso 2 morgens on the "Midwoute" plains known as No. 10, withsalt-meadows. His will was dated 15 May 1694 and proved in 1698.
