Hannah married (_____) Tingley about 1638. Anderson claims there were no recorded children.[1] However, her will gives bequests to two Tingle[y] grandchildren, Samuel and Thomas.
There are Malden births of Samuel and Thomas Tingley, in the right time frame, children of Samuel Tingle and wife Elizabeth (supposedly Call).
By 1644 Hannah had married James Barrett, since their first known child was born April 6, 1644 at Charlestown. The will of Hannah's father, dated February 23, 1663/4, mentions "my daughter Hannah the wife of James Barratt." Also mentioned are his Barratt grandchildren: James, Steven.[1]
Children of Hannah and James Barrett:[2]
- James was born April 6, 1644.[1]
- Mary who married John Ross.
- Hannah was born January 21, 1647. She married John Scollay.
- Stephen married May 14, 1680.[3]
- John was born May 6, 1655.
- Sarah married Simon Grover
James Barrett died August 16, 1672. In his will, probated in August of 1672, Hannah received the east end of the house.[2]
Hannah made her will on April 29, 1681, "Hannah Barratt of Charlestown" and it was proved June 20, 1681.[3]Her first bequest was to "my two grandchildren Samuell & Thomas Tingle," (they were also the grandchildren of Thomas Call, by their mother Elizabeth)[2]then she went on to make bequests to her children with James Barrett,[4]three children and their heirs;[2]two children of her daughter Hannah Scollay; to daughters Mary Ross and Sarah Grover and children, and to grandchild John Barrett.[3]
Hannah died in 1681.[5]
Research Notes
Regarding Palmer Tingley of Ipswich, Massachusetts, Tingley says, "No record can be found of his...marriage. He is claimed as the husband of Anna Fosdick, because he is the only person of the name of Tingle living in the Colonies at that time of suitable age to be her husband."[6]R. C. Anderson in "Great Migration" says of this record: "While there is no evidence to disprove this statement, neither is there sufficient evidence to accept it, especially given the propensity of this author for inventing genealogical connections." Anderson says there is no marriage, nor any children recorded for Palmer Tingley.[4]Anderson goes on to say that Hannah Fosdick's marriage to Palmer Tingley "may be so, but her husband may just as well have been some other totally unrecorded man of that surname."[1]
