Obituary: Andrew Dugo / Former Post-Gazette sandlot sports writer
Tuesday, July 29, 2003
By Jan Ackerman, Post-Gazette Staff Writer
Sports was always at the center of Andrew Dugo's life -- as a youth playing football or baseball on the streets of Garfield and as a sports writer for numerous newspapers, including the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Mr. Dugo, a quiet, gentle fellow who was known for his crisp, neat appearance in the newsroom, especially loved to write a column about sandlot sports teams, the community sporting events that were at the core of his own youth. During his long career, he also worked on newspapers in New York, Las Vegas and Erie.
"He liked to write about the common person," said Danny Palmer, a retired clerk from the Post-Gazette sports department.
Mr. Dugo, 97, of Shadyside, died of respiratory failure Friday at Presbyterian SeniorCare in Oakmont.
"He had other jobs offered to him, but he always wanted to write," said his brother, Ben Dugo, of Ormand Beach, Fla., and Warren, Pa.
Mr. Dugo, who was born in Sicily in 1905, immigrated with his family to Garfield at age 5. While still learning to speak English, he came to understand that sports was the universal language in his neighborhood where street fighting, baseball and football brought together youths from different cultures -- Irish, Germans and Italians.
After graduating from Peabody High School, Mr. Dugo worked his way through several colleges, earning money from a variety of jobs while earning degrees from Duquesne University and Columbia University in New York, said his nephew, Jack Samuels, of Stanton Heights.
"He used to walk dogs in New York City. He would drive a cab, he was a checkout cashier," Samuels said.
Mr. Dugo's years in the world of sports brought him close associations with famous names of the day, including the late Steelers founder Art Rooney Sr. In the sandlot baseball leagues, he once pinch-hit for baseball legend Honus Wagner when both of them were playing on a team sponsored by a cab company.
In 1943, at age 38, Mr. Dugo enlisted in the Army and served as an interpreter in Italy.
His newspaper career included jobs with the International News Service in New York, the Greenwich Village News, the Erie Gazette, the Homestead Messenger, the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph and the Post-Gazette.
Marino Parascenzo, retired Post-Gazette golf writer, said Mr. Dugo, late in his career, served as a makeup editor in the days of hot type. He would supervise the assembling of the sports pages for the early edition, known as the "bulldog."
"He was soft-spoken and shy, always gracious ... and a real gentleman," Parascenzo said.
After retiring from the Post-Gazette in 1971, Mr. Dugo was inducted into several sports halls of fame.
His wife of 52 years, Marie Lagnese Dugo, died in 1987.
In addition to his brother, he is survived by two sisters, Roseanne Bilitho of Orange City, Fla., and Marie Abbott of Carmichaels, Greene County.
Visitation is today from 1 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at McCabe Brothers Funeral Home, 5300 Penn Ave., Bloomfield. A Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church in Garfield.
