BAIN, Andrew Geddes; p. Independent; r. Captain of levies in the Sixth Kaffir War, 1834. As an explorer he penetrated as far as the Molopo River. Road engineer who constructed the Queen's Road, the Katberg Pass, Oudeberg and van Ryneveld Passes, Mitchell's Pass, and Bain's Kloof Pass. Also the Father of South African Geology, his labours in this field being recognized by the Queen, the British Museum, and several international scientific institutions. Compiled the first geological map of South Africa. Wrote Journals on his travels, a burlesque, Kaatjie Kekkelbek, and a poem, British Settlers.

Fossil named after him (Dicynodon Bainii) also a freshwater fish, Eastern Cape Rocky (Sandelia Bainsii). He produced South Africa's first comprehensive geological map in 1852.
