notes
From George Thomas Little. Genealogical and family history of the state of Maine; (Volume 2) online. (page 62 of 122)
The Harris family here treated comes of English ancestors
"... In New England the particular family here considered begins its history in Charlestown in the colony of Massachusetts Bay, with one who has been referred to as John Harris, of Charlestown and North Yarmouth, and who is said by some chroniclers to have been the John Harris who married Amy Hills. This, however, is not certain, for there were two John Harrises in Charlestown and not of the same family, so far as is known. The John Harris who married Amy Hills appears to have remained in Massachusetts, and spent his life in Charlestown and Newbury, and there is no evidence that he ever went to Maine, while the John Harris, of Charlestown and North Yarmouth, did remove to that colony and lived there for a time at least. ..."
The will of Joseph Hills of Malden "now of Newbury" dated 14 September 1687 named no daughter Amy, nor any children or grandchildren surnamed Harris.
