Their eldest son, Ralph de Betham, was one of those persons who were delivered as hostages to King John in 1216 for the future fidelity of Gilbert Fitz-Reinfred, baron of Kendal, under whom the de Bethams held their lands. Ralph's father, Thomas, was living in 1242, being then a witness to a grant of lands by Sir John Fleming of Beckermet.
