Alice Doggett

Alice Brotherton, baptized Husborne Crawley, Bedfordshire, 6 March 1602[/3], daughter of Thomas and Ellen (_____) Brotherton; she died by 1667.

In 1911, Charles Banks, author of The History of Martha's Vineyard, Dukes County, Massachusetts, published "Of his [John Daggett] first wife we know nothing definite, but the author is of the opinion that the Hepzibah Daggett who signed as witness March 16, 1660... was then his wife." and not his daughter. In a footnote he stated "A guess may be hazarded that her name may be Brotherton.[1]

In 1997, researcher Gordon Remington concluded that only one of the statements was correct. John's wife's first name is Alice and her birth surname is Brotherton; the witness Hepzibah of 1660 was his daughter.[2]

Family

John Doggett married first in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire, England, 29 August 1622 Alice Brotherton, who was baptized Husborne Crawley, Bedfordshire, 6 March 1602[/3], daughter of Thomas and Ellen (_____) Brotherton;[citation needed] she died by 1667.

It is believed that his wife, the mother of his children, died on the island before he moved to Plymouth, Massachusetts, where, in his old age, he married Mrs. Bathsheba Pratt on Aug. 29, 1667.[citation needed] She was probably the widow of Joshua Pratt of Plymouth.

Nothing is known of his first wife, but Banks was of the opinion that Hepzibah Daggett, who signed as witness March 3, 1660, to the sale of the farm from Wampamag to John Daggett was then his wife. He guesses that her name may have been "Brotherton," as this appears as a baptismal name in the Thomas Daggett branch as early as 1686. [4]

He married second in Plymouth 29 August 1667 as "John Doged, of Martin's Vineyard," Bathshebath Prat, widow of JOSHUA PRATT; she was alive on 4 June 1673.[citation needed]

• 4. ELIZABETH, b. abt. 1638; m. JEREMIAH WHITTON (10).
• 5. HEPZIBAH, b. abt. 1642; m. JOHN EDDY (10) abt. 1658.
• 6. JOSEPH, b. 1647. Married Alice.

Place of death has also been (erroneously?) reported to be Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.

• As of Alice's death in 1647:
  • Edgartown did not exist. The hamlet founded by Rev. Thomas Mayhew, Jr. in 1642 was named Great Harbor. It was not named Edgar Towne until 8 July 1671.
  • Dukes County did not exist. It was not created until 1 November 1683, as Dukes County, Province of New York.
  • In 1691, Dukes County was transferred to the Province of Massachusetts Bay (which was chartered on 7 October 1691 and came into effect on 14 May 1692).
• Alice and John were married on 29 August 1622 in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire, England.
