About Alfred Boon

MR ALFRED BOON

Another old colonist passed away yesterday in the person of Mr Alfred Boon, father-in-law of Mr F. J. Burgess, Clerk of the Warden and Magistrate's Courts at the Thames. The deceased, who was 84 years of age, was born at Binslem, Staffordshire, in 1811, and was brought up as an architect and builder. In l844 he arrived in Auckland with the Rev. Walter Lawry, General Superintendent of the Wesleyan Home Mission in the South Seas, under whom he worked in the capacity of carpenter and architect. He was a resident at the Three Kings for some time, instructing the Maori students there in carpentry, but subsequently carried on business on his own account in Auckland as an architect. He came to the Thames shortly after it opened in the hope of retrieving his fortunes, for by a commercial disaster which befell him about that time he lost the savings of a life-time, and as old age was approaching, had to begin life afresh. Not meeting with success, he left the Thames to reside with his son, settled at Mahurangi, with whom, with the exception oi: lengthened periodical visits to the Thames, he has since resided. Lately he has been very unwell, though on Sunday he appeared to be a little brighter than usual, but yesterday morning, when Mrs Burgess went to call him, she found that he had passed away in his sleep.
