About Albert Leroy Welches
Albert (my Dad) served in the Navy during WW11. He was a machinist on the USS Charles Lawrence and the USS Ottawa .He did keep records of where he and his shipmates were and when. We also have several thumbnail pictures taken while in Ireland during the war. He and his shipmates were given leave in Ireland and they would get their hair cuts here. His father once woke up his mother (My Grandparents) telling her they needed to pray for Albert. They then marked it on their calendar and when Albert returned home they questioned him about the date and he told them their ship had been hit on that date. My grandparents had 3 of their 4 sons who served during WW11. All 3 survived. My Dad was 2nd to the oldest of his 8 siblings and was the oldest son. He helped his parents out financially to support the family. He often worked 2 jobs as I was growing up. I was the youngest of 3 and was my Dad's favorite in many ways. My daughter was born in Dec. of 1980 . My Dad died in Feb. of 1981 of cancer.. I have always felt he held on those last 2 months in order to meet his granddaughter. I was 27 when he died and often felt cheated that I did not have more time with him and for my daughter not getting to know her grandfather. My son was 7 when he died. I remember my son and I went to one of his treatments with him. After we went to eat and shopping for school clothes for my son. His strength and tolerance to pain never ceased to amaze me. He would go for treatment and then head back to work. What a work ethic!! I miss him being in my life.
