Albrecht I the Great, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg
(* 1236 , † 15 August 1279 , also called Albrecht Lange) from the house of Guelph , along with his brother was John I second Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg until the division the Duchy in 1269 and then until his death in the first Regent of the newly created principality Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel .
Life
After the death of his father Otto , the first Duke of Brunswick and Luneburg, took over Albrecht in 1252 the government of the Duchy and the guardianship of his younger brother Johann . First, the two brothers ruled the duchy jointly. In 1267 they took then, because none of the brothers came out as the Duke, the division of the Duchy before. Albrecht shared ownership, Johann was given the right to choose a part. Johann himself chose the Lüneburg Country with the city of Hanover as a duchy. Albrecht received the land around Braunschweig and Wolfenbüttel Calenberg areas in and around Göttingen. So he founded the so-called "Older house Braunschweig", his brother the "Older house Lüneburg". The division was finally effective for 1269. Albert I died in 1279 and was in the Brunswick Cathedral buried.
