Albert Babcock

Albert Babcock, son of Almon and Mary J. (Collins) Babcock and father of John F. was born in Ravenna, Portage county, Ohio, on September 12, 1824, and died in Rootstown township, this county, on April 26, 1905. As a boy and youth he received his early education in the common schools of the pioneer epoch, and his entire active career was one of conservative and fruitful identification with the great basic art of agriculture. He became the owner of 175 acres of valuable land in Rootstown township, and developed the same into one of the model farmsteads of this favored section of the Western Reserve. He made the best of permanent improvements on the place and was ever known as a man of unflagging- energy and productive ambition. His was a superior type of mental endowment, and he was well fortified in his opinions and his convictions, the while his course was ever guided upon a lofty plane of integrity and honor, so that he commanded the unequivocal esteem and confidence of all with whom he came in contact in the various relations of life. In politics he gave a stanch allegiance to the Democratic party and he was an influential factor in public affairs of a local nature. He was naturally a leader in thought and action, and such was the maturity of his judgment and such the rectitude of his character that his advice and counsel were eagerly sought by his fellow citizens, in matters of both public and private concern. As a competent surveyor, he assisted in running the original line of the Cleveland & Pittsburg railroad from Wellsville to Ravenna. He was a member of the Ravenna lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

April 26, 1854, was solemnized the marriage of Albert Babcock to Miss Betsey E. Avery, who was born at Aurora, Portage county, Ohio, on May 30, 1831, and who still resides on the old homestead farm, about two miles south of Ravenna. She is a daughter of Reuben and Corinna Avery, the former of whom lived to attain to the patriarchal age of 101 years. He was a descendant of the well known Avery family of Groton, Massachusetts, and was numbered among the sterling pioneers of the Western Reserve. Albert and Betsey E. Avery became the parents of one son and five daughters, all of whom are living at the time of this writing, in 1909. (Narrative continues on the profile of his son, John F. ALBERT BABCOCK, farmer, P. O. Ravenna, was born in Ravenna Township, this county, September 12, 1824; son of Almon and Mary Babcock. The former, born in Granville, Mass., November 9, 1788, came to this county in 1810; the latter, born in Hartford, Conn., August 15, 1789, came to this county in 1812. They were married December 25, 1814, and remained here until their death, May 4, 1850, and May 28, 1859, respectively. Our subject was married, April 26, 1854, to Betsey E. Avery, born in Portage County, Ohio, May 30, 1831, daughter of Reuben and Corinne Avery, the former born in Hoosenick Colony of Connecticut, March 2, 1772; the latter in Farmington, Hartford Co., Conn., December 23, 1789. Mr. Avery was married the first time in 1804, to Rachel Baldwin, of his native State, and they resided in New York until 1816, when they moved to Aurora, this county, where she died in 1822, and he then married Corrinne Faxon February 9,1823, the widow of Isaac Faxon. Mr. Avery died May 25, 1873, his widow June 9, 1878.

Mr. and Mrs. Babcock have had six children:

• Josephine B.

Mr. Babcock has been engaged in farming through life, and owns 190 acres where he has resided since 1840. He is a member of the I. O. O. F.

Mary, dau. of Robert and Chloe (Wadsworth) Collins, b. Hartford, Conn., Aug. 15, 1789, d. Rootstown, May 28, 1859.

In June, 1810, Almon went from W. Granville, Mass., to Ohio as a member of the Charlestown Land Company to look after his father's land.
