About Agnes d'Aumâle
Agnes d'Aumale

The name of Adam´s wife is not known. Secondary sources often indicate that she was Agnes d'Aumâle, widow of William de Roumare, daughter of Etienne de Blois Comte d'Aumâle & his wife Hawise de Mortimer. A manuscript history of the foundation of Melsa Abbey records that “Willielmus” had “sorores quatuor, filias Stephani” who married “una…vicedomino de Pynkeney, altera…vicedomino de Verberay, tertia…Bertanno de Brikebet, quarta Willielmo de Romare et postea Petro de Brus”[904]. The assumption is made that the manuscript history not only mistook "Petro" for "Adam", but also that it reversed the order of Agnes´s marriages: the birth date of Isabel, daughter of Adam [II] de Brus (son of Adam [I]), estimated to [1168/70] on the basis of her first marriage in [1180], suggests the likelihood that Adam [II] was born before 1143 (approximate date of Agnes´s marriage to William de Roumare) rather than after 1151 (date of death of William de Roumare). As a general principle, it appears preferable to find ways of confirming that a primary source is factually correct rather than justifying why it is in error. No other primary source has yet been identified which names Agnes as the wife of Adam, or as the mother of his children. In addition, as noted above, Peter [I] de Brus was named in a charter dated to [1155/65]. It is therefore possible that the manuscript history is factually correct and that Agnes d´Aumâle married Peter as her second husband, presumably as his second wife considering his likely age by that time. While waiting for other primary source information to emerge, this appears to be a safer interim conclusion compared with assuming that the manuscript history made two factual errors, relating to the name of Agnes´s Brus husband and to the order of her marriages. Another possibility is that the mother of Adam [II] de Brus was related to the Percy family, as suggested by the 1170/71 Pipe Roll which records "Ada de Brus" accounting for ".c. li. p hedibus Robt de Pci qs habuit I custod sua p habenda tra Ærnaldi auunculi eorum" in Yorkshire[905].
WILLIAM de Roumare "Hélie"[802] (-[12 Sep] 1151, bur [Revesby]). “Willelmus de Roumara comes Lincolniæ” made a grant to Beverley, with the consent of “Hadewysa comitissa uxore mea et Willelmo filio meo et herede”, by charter dated to [1144/46][803]. “Willielmus de Romara comes de Lincolnia et Willielmus filius eius et Hawdewissa comitissa uxor eius” founded Revesby abbey by undated charter[804]. The Genealogia Fundatoris of Coventry Monastery names “Willielmum de Romara” as son of “Willielmum postea comitem de terris paternis et Lincoln comitatus”, specifying that he predeceased his father and was buried “apud Revesby”[805]. [The necrology of the monastery of Ouche records the death "12 Sep" of "Willelmus de Romara"[806].] m (after 1143) as her first husband, AGNES d'Aumâle, daughter of ETIENNE de Blois Comte d'Aumâle & his wife Hawise de Mortimer. A manuscript history of the foundation of Melsa Abbey records that “Willielmus” had “sorores quatuor, filias Stephani” who married “una…vicedomino de Pynkeney, altera…vicedomino de Verberay, tertia…Bertanno de Brikebet, quarta Willielmo de Romare et postea Petro de Brus”[807]. She married secondly (after 1151) Peter [I] de Brus. William & his wife had three children:
i) WILLIAM (-[1198], bur [Revesby]). He succeeded his paternal grandfather in [1160] as Earl of Lincoln, as a minor probably until 1166[808]. The Red Book of the Exchequer records enfeoffments in the duchy of Normandy in [1172], "Willelmus de Romara" with 14 knights "in Romeis apud Novum Mercatum" and seven other knights[809]. “Willielmus de Roumara nepos Willielmi comitis et hæres eius” confirmed donations to Revesby abbey, founded by “avus meus”, by charter dated 1 Apr 1172[810]. The Red Book of the Exchequer, listing scutage payments in [1190/91], records "Willelmus de Roumara" paying "xxix l xii s vi d, lvii milites et quartam" in Lincolnshire[811]. The Red Book of the Exchequer, listing scutage payments in [1194/95], records "Willelmus de Romare" paying "lix l xv s" in Lincolnshire[812]. m firstly ALICE, daughter of ---. She is named as William's wife in a charter to Spalding[813]. m secondly as her first husband, PHILIPPA d'Alençon, daughter of JEAN [I] Comte d'Alençon & his wife Beatrix de Maine [Anjou] (-before [1220]). She married secondly Guillaume [III] Malet de Graville, and thirdly (before Oct 1215) as his [first] wife, Guillaume de Préaux.
ii) ROBERT . "Willelmo de Roumara, Roberto fratre eius…" witnessed the charter, dated to the reign of King Henry II, under which "Matheus de Beningworde" acknowledged a donation of property by "Rogero de Benigworde fratre meo"[814].
iii) ROGER . Domesday Descendants notes "Roger de Romara, son of William de Romara and grandson of William I de Romara earl of Lincoln"[815].
