2. ADRIAN? WHETEHILL ( Richard') was born about the year 1435. He
married Margaret Worsley who died, his widow, in 1505. She was the
daughter of Otewell Worsley who was a soldier, at one time stationed in
Calais. Whetehill died in 1503, and, as both he and his wife were buried in London, they probably spent their last years there although Calais must be considered their real home.
Adrian was a young man in 1463 when he shared with his father the
grant for their lives of the offices of controller and head of the mint at Calais.
He must have had a steady character, for throughout the Wars of the Roses,
when Calais was torn by internal strife, and saw the arrival of great rebels in flight and the departure of expeditions for conquest , although he was, as was inevitable, a soldier, he returned to his father's side and was ready to succeed Richard Whetehill when he left the active duties of the controllership to take over command of the castle of Guines.
Having, like his father, taken the side of the “ kingmaker” and the Lan
castrians in 1470, he received a pardon on August 6 , 1471 , addressed to him
as Adrian Whetehill of the town of Calais, esquire, alias controller of the
town and marches, alias late soldier of the castle of Guysnes, alias late soldier of Calais , alias son of Richard Whetehill, esquire.
