Adèle I re de Selvesse

Adele I re of Selvesse or Selnesse I re is the founder of Ardres to x e or xi th century. Rich orphan, with many strongholds in several places such as Peuplingues , the church of Bonningues , that of Suaveque ( Zouafques ), lands in Hondschoote, given by the Saint-Vaast abbey to one of his predecessors who during 'a duel had preserved a land of the abbey. Pursued by the Count of Guines , Eustace I st of Guines , her neighbor and overlord, who wants to marry her to one of his familiar, she turns to her uncle Frameric or Framericus, bishop of Thérouanne , to find the help. The bishop and his niece use a stratagem to avoid saying no to the count: Adele gives all her possessions to her uncle and thus becomes his vassal and his protege. Framericus then married her to a lord with sufficient authority and power to resist the Count of Guînes. His choice fell on a gentleman, valiant and renowned knight, from the country of Furnes, appearing to be the first of the nobility of Furnes, named Herebert or Herred or Herard, nicknamed Crangroc , which would mean turned up habit, nickname inherited from a day when he appeared in public with a turned up habit, (according to some to reduce it, which is refuted by Lambert d'Ardres , would be a native of Peuplingues, stingy to the point of leading the plow himself to limit the expense, and turning and returning his clothes, hence his nickname. In order to make Herred attentive to his church, Framericus endowed the couple with several lands including the village of Clerques , Comecques, (Coyecques ?) Brulinghen, Bochout near Aquinnes. He still gives them the village of Helbodeshen near Longuilliers ( Longvilliers ?) With other lands in Boulonnais. Adèle and her husband settle in Selvesse and end up winning the good graces of the Count of Guînes. Herred becomes peer and baron of the Morins church ( diocese of Thérouanne ), a title having as a counterpart that he and his successors, together with the other peers responsible for this action, carry the newly elected bishop from the place of his election to the 'at his episcopal seat. In Adèle's estates there is a meadow where the locals get used to meeting to have fun and drink beer . Adèle and her husband let houses be built around the cabaret and the place gradually becomes an important village: Ardres whose meaning would be pasture or meadow in memory of this origin . Erred died before being able to carry out his plan to transfer their castle of residence to Ardres.

On the advice of the bishop and her relatives and friends, Adèle remarried to Elbodon, brother of the lord of Bergues, and founded the dynasty of the lords of Ardres. Elbodon would have arranged the site of Ardres to build there a first castle, a pond, a mill, a road leading to the church of Ardres through the marsh, work however unfinished because of the death of Adèle. Adèle is buried in the cemetery surrounding the church of Saint-Omer d'Ardres like her husband who survived her for many years. Adèle would have had children from both beds, but only one son is known to her, Arnoul or Arnouldː

Adèle II de Selvesse, born of the first bed, lady of Ardres, wife Eustache, lord and baron of Fiennes , (old name: Filnes, Fielnes, Fienles ), one of the twelve baronies of the county of Guînes. Adelis or Aélis d'Ardres, born from the first bed, married Robert d'Alembon, known as Putepelice , son of Guy I d'Alembon, lord of Alembon, barony of Guînes (see lords of Alembon ). Arnould I d'Ardres which follows.
