Biography

Complete Peerage explains the following:

  • He was serving in Normandy in November 1201.
  • He went with his brother Henry on the campaign of King John to Ireland in 1210.
  • He had inheritance from not only his father, but also his mother, and perhaps an aunt or uncle, so the family estate increased during his time. His Whatton estate, which his grandfather had held, but not his father "comprised 4 fees of the Honour of Tickhill, 2 held of Earl Warenne, and 3 of the Earl of Lincoln in Yorks, 3 fees in Whatton, Hawksworth and Aslacton, Notts, of the Barony of Gant, and the manor of Carlton Scroop, Lines, and Ketton, Suffolk".
  • "For some reason Adam was obliged to give his two sons as hostages to the King."
  • "He was a Justice Itinerant under commissions of 1218, 1219, 1224, 1231 and 1234."
  • In 1225 he was one of the Yorkshire collectors of the 15th, which was a tax.
  • He was summoned for military service in Wales in 1241, and in Scotland 1244.
  • He died in 1247, before September.

ADAM de Neufmarché ([1173/77]-1247, before Sep). Bracton notes a claim, dated 1225, by "Adam de Novo Mercato" against "Willelmum comitem Warenne et priorem de Lewes" for "ecclesiam de Hethfeldia…advocacionem", the defendant claiming that "Mabilie de Tylle…avia ipsius Ade" gave the advocacy to him, while the plaintiff claimed that "Mabilia…[et] Odonis de Tylli viri sui" gave "manerium de Hethfeldia" to "Henrico de Novo Mercato patri suo in maritagium cum filia eorum"[1761]. m ---. The name of Adam’s wife is not known.

Adam & his wife had two children:

i) JOHN de Neufmarché (-after 1242). King John sent "Johem et Adam filios et obsides ipsius Ade" for "Ade de Novo Mercato" by order dated 18 Oct 1213[1762]. “Adam de Novo Mercato filius Johannis de Novo Mercato” donated “locum beati Nicholai de Cobbecroft” to Pontefract for the soul of “Johanne uxoris mee” by undated charter[1763]. - NEUFMARCHE[1764].

ii) ADAM de Neufmarché . King John sent "Johem et Adam filios et obsides ipsius Ade" for "Ade de Novo Mercato" by order dated 18 Oct 1213[1765].
