Abigail Bartholomew was christened on Dec 8,1672, the daughter of Lieut. William Bartholomew and Mary Johnson Bartholomew of Hatfield,MA. As a child, Abigail and several other people were captured during the Indian raid on Hatfield, MA, taken to Canada on Sep 19,1677 and held captive for several months by the Indians. All were ransomed for £200. Twice married, twice widowed, and the mother/stepmother of a large family abigail raised before dying "in the 80th year of her age".

Shortly after her 18th birthday she married her 1st husband Joseph Frissell on Jan 11,1691/2 at Woodstock,CT. This was one of the earliest marriages there. Joseph was the son of James Frissell and Mary Busketh Frissell. During their 13-year marriage they had 9 children together before he died on May 13,1704. Widowed in her early thirties, she married again within five years 2nd husband, Samuel Paine, a widower with several children, on Jan 18,1708/9 in Woodstock,CT. The mature newlyweds' blended family was later increased by two children born of this second marriage.

Abigails slate stele gravestone is extraordinary in that it features neither a winged death's head nor a soul effigy in its tympanum, but a clock with Roman numerals, its hands at the Roman numerals XII and VI. Like the pick and shovel and the crossed bones images which also adorn her stone, the clock is a mortality symbol akin to the more commonly seen hourglass.
