About Abigail Higley

Abigail was the eldest of four children born to Samuel Filer (also Fyler) and Abigail Phelps. Her siblings; Ann, Samuel Jr, and John. From Simsbury vital records; "Nathaniel Higley of Simsbury and Abegail Filer of Windsor were married the twenty ninth day March; One Thousand Seven hundred and twenty". Nathaniel was the son of Capt. John Higley and Sarah Strong, but he and Abigail were also second cousins, being the great grand-children of Elder John Strong of Northampton, Massachusetts. (Nathaniel's maternal grandfather was Return Strong; and Abigail's paternal grandmother was Return's sister, Experience.

The couple settled upon lands that Nathaniel owned in the northern part of Simsbury (which became North Granby) where they lived long and productive lives and had at least ten children all born in Simsbury; Abigail, Mary, Theopolis, Soloman, Dudley, Daniel, Mindwell, Nehemiah and Noah. Nathaniel died in Sep. 1773, and his will, signed 13 Feb 1773, he directed that after his depts. were paid, his wife shall bare one third part his lands, plowing, mowing, woods, and pasturing, with all the household goods during her natural life. The exact date of Abigail's death is not known and unless or until more information comes to light, it's reasonable to assume that Abigail died after September 1773 and before 1810. Her unmarried daughter, Mary most probably lived with her until her death, then moved to, live with her brother David, who died in 1812. It's also reasonable to assume that Abigail died sometime after 1773 in Simsbury, and most probably buried there.
