About Aaron Jovon Blount, Sr.
Birth: Mar. 30, 1977 Monterey County California, USA
Death: Apr. 22, 2003 Red Oak Fulton County Georgia, USA
Fulton County Georgia police officer killed in the line of duty.
On the evening of April 22, 2003. 26-old officer Aaron Jovon Blount had been assigned to desk work at the police station for most of his shift, and had left the station only 18 minutes earlier to go out on patrol.
He noticed a car driving erratically and stopped it in the Red Oak community of South Fulton County. Before he had a chance to radio in the stop, the driver of the vehicle exited the car and opened fire on Blount, who was still in his patrol car. The officer was struck twice in the head and once in the shoulder.
Another officer who was driving past the corner, found the victim's patrol car with the emergency lights flashing and Blount slumped across the steering wheel. The patrol car, which was still in drive, had rolled across the highway and came to rest against a set of railroad tracks.
The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended in Miami, Florida, five days after the murder by U.S. Marshals and Miami-Dade police officers. The suspect was returned to Fulton County and has been charged with capital murder. Friends and family say his life was filled with so much hope dedication and accomplishments.
Blount was born in California and traveled the world with his mother during her military career. Upon her being stationed at Ft. McPherson in Atlanta, mother and son decided to call Atlanta home. Blount graduated in 1996 from Westlake High School where he lettered in football, baseball and ran track. He attended the Naval Prep School and was later accepted in the Coast Guard Academy. Blount later attended the Austin Peay College in Clarksville, TN.
He joined the Fulton County Police Department in Dec. of 2000, assigned to the Evening Watch, South Precinct. Blount also was a unselfish and caring person, serving as coach at Welcome All Park for a Youth Basketball Team, where he spent most of his off days coaching and mentoring. His untimely death hit his family and community hard.
Officer Blount is the third Fulton County Police Officer killed in the line of duty since the departments formation, on July 1, 1975. Officer Blount had been employed with the Fulton County Police Department for just under three years, and is survived by his mother, fiancee and 13-month-old son.
At the time of his death Blount and his fiancée were in the midst of planning their wedding to be held in June in Las Vegas. Invitations to the wedding had just been mailed the day prior to his death.
