Aélis

Robert was married twice. Through his first wife, Aelis, a descendant of Charlemagne, he had two daughters. Each married powerful lay vassals of their father: Emma of France (894–935) to Rudolph, Duke of Burgundy, and Hildebranda (895–931) to Herbert II of Vermandois.

Beatrice married Robert in 895 (roughly age 15) after Aelis/Adele du Maine died. Given that Adele de France was born also around 895, it is likely that the childbirth caused Robert's first wife's death. However, there are no records indicating much of anything about Aelis/Adele du Maine's life. Therefore, she was never Queen of France, merely the Duchess of France (wife of the Dux Francorum).

The origins of Aelis, including her name, are not proven.

However, as King Robert's known wife Béatrix de Vermandois could not have been the mother of his daughter Adela (married to the brother of Béatrix) it is assumed that this earlier marriage is correct. According to Europäische Stammtafeln[76], Robert's first wife was named AELIS. This may be based on the 21 May 907 donation of Rebais abbey to the church of Paris which refers to "comitis Rotberti et Adele comitisse"[77]. However, as shown below, this is more likely to refer to Robert and his daughter than to his wife.

Robert giftet seg to ganger. Med sin første kone, Aelis, en etterkommer av Karl I hadde han datteren Adele/ Hildebrant. Det er sannsynlig at fødselen forårsaket at Roberts første kone døde. Men er det ingen oppføringer om noe om Aelis/Adele du Maine liv. Derfor var hun aldri dronning av Frankrike, bare hertuginne av Frankrike (kona til Dux Francorum).
