• Aaron In the Hebrew Bible and the Qur'an, Aaron (Hebrew: אַהֲרֹן‎ Ahărōn, Arabic: هارون‎ Hārūn, Greek (Septuagint): Ααρών ), who is often called "'Aaron the Priest"' (אֵהֲרֹן הֵכֹּהֵן) and once Aaron the Levite (אַהֲרֹן הַלֵּוִי) (Exodus 4:14), was the older brother of Moses, (Exodus 6:16-20; Qur'an 28:34) and a prophet of God. He represented the priestly functions of his tribe, becoming the first High Priest of the Israelites. While Moses was receiving his education at the Egyptian royal court, and during his exile among the Midianites, Aaron and his sister Miriam remained with their kinsmen in the eastern border-land of Egypt (Goshen). There, Aaron gained a name for eloquent and persuasive speech, so that when the time came for the demand upon the Pharaoh to release Israel from captivity, Aaron became his brother’s nabi, or spokesman, to his own people (Exodus 7:1) and, after their unwillingness to hear, to the Pharaoh himself (Exodus 7:9). Various dates for his life have been proposed, ranging from approximately 1600 to 1200 BC.

Moses' brother and a fluent speaker, Aaron was appointed by God to go with Moses and do the talking for his tongue-tied brother. He shared the responsibilities of leading the children of Israel from captivity in Egypt, even propping up Moses' arm during a battle with Amalek to help inspire the Israelites to victory. Moses took Aaron and other leaders up Mount Sinai, and appointed him and his family to the priesthood. Aaron was not only the first high priest of Israel, but was appointed temporary judge of the people when Moses was on Sinai. It was at this time that Aaron finally gave in to the people's wishes, supervised the fabrication of the golden calf, and permitted a wild celebration around it. When Moses returned and angrily reproached his brother, Aaron shifted the blame to the people. In spite of this lapse into idolatry, Aaron was looked up to as "the priest" during the forty years of wandering after leaving Egypt. אַהֲרֹן הכהן, ראשון הכהנים ואחיהם הבכור של משה ומרים. לפי המסורת, כל הכהנים הם צאצאיו. משום שמשה היה כבד-פה, שימש אהרן כדוברו של משה בפני פרעה במצרים. היה הכהן הגדול של עם ישראל, בהיותם במדבר. חז"ל מסבירים כי זכה לייסד את שושלת הכהנים, משום שכאשר ראה שמשה, אחיו הצעיר, מונה להיות הנושא והנותן עם פרעה לא קינא בו. חז"ל לומדים זאת מן הפסוק "וראך ושמח בליבו" שאומר האל למשה לפני פגישת האחים.

ביום חנוכת המשכן, בו נכנס לשמש בכהונה, שני בניו הגדולים של אהרן, נדב ואביהוא, מתו. נדב ואחיו אביהוא נכנסו להקטיר "אש זרה", ונשרפו חיים. את מקומם ירשו שני האחים הצעירים, אלעזר ואיתמר.

במהלך נדידת בני ישראל במדבר עירער קורח על מנהיגותם של משה ואהרן ובניסים שהתרחשו מאוחר יותר הוכיח האל את בחירתו באהרן על ידי מבחן קטורת הסמים - מאתיים וחמישים מקטירי הקטורת של קורח נשרפו אך כאשר אהרן הקטיר קטורת הוא עצר את המגפה שפגעה בעם.
