Mary was born during the 1844 Flood in St. Louis. The story I was always told was her mother did not live through the flood and she was handed out of a window in Carondolet, St. Louis, Mo. with her brother, Antoine..born in Nov. 1841. There may have been another sister, Elizabeth, born about 1839. She was taken care of by various families and listed as an orphan in the census. In the August 28, 1850 census she was living with Peter Purcelley, a farmer in Carondolet, and his wife, Elizabeth, and Theobold and John Purcelley. In 1850 Antoine lived with a farmer John Ugai, 42, and wife, Cecelia,32, and Eliza, 13, and John, 9. Also listed is Elizabeth Barada, 13. It was said she was not treated well by the people that she lived with. In the 1860 Census ,Antoine is listed as 19 and living in St; Louis. He possibly served in the Civil War in the Union Army for the 33rd Regiment in the Missouri Infantry. 1860 to 1865. He married and was listed a widower in 1910 , living with sister, Mary, her son, Louis and her daughter, Fannie Evens and husband, Baker.Also their children Howard A., Paulina E.,Lottie J., and Maude Elizabeth. In 1920, Antoine,68, lived with Mary's oldest son, Albert and wife, Fannie Jackson in Desoto, Mo.and children, Edgar, 19, and Bessie,16, aand Ray,14, and Dewey, 11, and Albert, 9 mo..In 1920 census ,Mary is listed as living in Paragould, Ark. with daughter,Maude Lillian and Mart McDermott and 3 granddaughters..Mary, Pauline and Mignon. She died in 1929 at 78 years and was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Desoto, Mo.
