John Updike - een 'nieuwe' Nederlander in America

On for our international friends... John Updike is a new addition on Geni. His family line goes over New Amsterdam to the village of Elburg in Gelderland (The Netherlands). I'm inviting our Dutch friends to further explore the Dutch connections, because the publicly available sources miss concrete proof of the 'family situation' in Elburg between 1500-1600.

Éen van mijn netwerkers bij Seniorweb heeft het hele Gelderland archief aan kerkboeken, dopen, trouwen en begraven, DTB dus.
In noodgevallen kan ik bij hem aankloppen.

ik kan de zus Lysbeth POST niet toevoegen als dochter van Lodewyck & Agnietje Bonen. Heb wel samenwerkingen gevraagd, maar dat kan even duren. Als jullie het willen fiksen graag, dan ga ik de afstammelingen van Lysbeth POST New Amsterdam 18-07-1655 d. 1733 wel even invoeren. Je komt dan ook weer Franse namen tegen, dus de mix wordt steeds interessanter...

Zo zie je maar weer, soms werkt geni anders dan ik denk. Heb haar echt niet gezien in de boom, maar vanmiddag heb ik ook een vergissing gemaakt door de boom te laten zien alleen met directe voorouders. Daar zal het hem in hebben gelegen. Dus voortaan let ik beter op in welke 'mode' ik mijn voorstelling heb staan. Fred, bedankt, want dubbelen hebben we al genoeg. jmu.

Ik denk dat Jeanne bedoelt dat ze er geen namen kan bijvoegen omdat ze geen samenwerking heeft met de betrokken managers - en daarom effen wil dupliceren op een profiel waar het wél kan.
Alvast hard opletten op the schrijfwijzen: tussen de Franse namen in kwestie zitten De Trieux en Brocaud - die zwaar verbasterd zijn tot ondermeer Truax en Bragaw/Brokaw. Sommige families gaan vandaag nog onder die verbasteringen door - anderen niet!

Regarding the Updikes in the US... There are essentially TWO unrelated Updike trees - one coming from Elburg (NL) and the other one from Wesel (Germany). A lot of errors on Geni were related to that (and I'm sure I'll find more errors over time). It can be very confusing. Hence, it does make sense NOT to rely too much on things like Ancestry.com - but try to take the official family publications. Those may definitely contain errors too - but probably less!

Have you guys built out the tree yet for the great late American writer, John Hoyer Updike (1932-2009)?

John Updike added today to the tree. We have his lineage all the way to Elburg in Holland, around 1600. There is uncertainty about how the previous century looks like. BUT, at least John Updike is now in Geni :-)

He is in the Pulitzer Prize project now, is that ok with you Erica? For the adjective great is rather personal, who is in that project and who is not permitted to be linked? Rather personal choices sometimes, and for the Pulitzer a good jury made the choice, i think. Maybe you like to collaborate on the Pulitzer project, if you like also non-curators to work on it, be welcome too!

Thanks, Erica! You can easily imagine, this took probably at least 150 merges and reconnections ;-) But, John's there, and his genealogical legacy is assured :-)
