Martha Jefferson Randolph (Thomas Jefferson's daughter) mentions a "Ferrell" being given to Dr. Ben Randolph. It is known this Ferrell's
mother's name was Sally (The Slave families of Thomas Jefferson by B. Reed). Jefferson's farm book shows there was one Cary Ann
at Monticello and she had a sister Jenett. I believe Cary Ann and Jenett are Cary Ann Massie and Jenetta the first and second wives of
Ferrell Gaines. The Albemarle chancery case of Bradford Staples vs. Heirs of Lewis Mason shows Cary Ann Massie as Ferrell's first wife.
Cary Ann later married John Staples (who was also at Dr. Ben Randolph's-1867 personal property tax.
