I tried tracing the Sanyal part of my ancestry back by location and this is what I came up with :

Nuclear Family :
Calgary - Toronto - Riyadh - Amman - New Delhi - Calcutta

Family Tree :
Calcutta > present generation
Muzaffarpur (+ North Bihar) > last 2 generations
Nabadwip > the town my aunt (Manjulika Sanyal) once told me the family originated from and where some distant relatives still live

Clan / Gotra / Caste :
Barind > the area north-east of the Ganga in undivided Bengal, where Barendras historically come from
Kannauj > central UP, where Barendra brahmins (Kanyakubjas) trace their roots
Upper Doab > northern end of the Ganga-Yamuna 'V' (Madhyadesha) where Bengali brahmins claim to be from

I wonder how much of this is historically traceable ?
