I thought Family Tree Maker was released in the Beta...but I am not seeing it in the list of files to download.

If I do a GEDCOM file download, am I getting anything I wouldn't have gotten from a GEDCOM from Geni without AncestorSync?

Can I later download another copy for Family Tree Maker when it is available?

6/17/2011 at 9:08 PM

@Pamela Kristine Hurd ; I have a PC, Windows 7; I just used AncestorSync and uploaded to Legacy Family Tree and Roots Magic.

1.) Legacy Family Tree: Many dates showed as numeric and sometimes the day and month were switched.
2.) As you stated Place of Burial is showing as Residence
3.) Aloyse B. Carlson became Hazel Thomas?
4.) Some Children unattached to parents
5.) Some wives unattached to spouse
6.) Married name as an event, incorrect, some showed as maiden names
7. If female spouse did not have a maiden name; her name was brought into Legacy as her married name.

I am very concerned about the dates, I never use numeric, I always use date number, spelled out month and full 4 digit year.

This was just a brief look and will try it again tomorrow and see if there is differences. I had not added souces yet to Geni, so will try that too.

Version: Ancestorsync for GENi
Build: 2011.6.17
OS: Windows 7 SP1 x64

1. When I fill in my credentials, AS sometimes states they're incorrect. Retrying usually works.
2. When starting a download, AS very frequently states I have no internet connection. To check, I browsed to the GENi website simultaneously and verified that my internet connection AND the GENi website are working.
3. Everytime when download starts (when bug nr. 2 does not occur) AS sits there for several minutes, frequently stating "STATUS: Processing your request", and eventually the download actually starts.

6/18/2011 at 12:17 AM

update to previous message:

It might be a coincidence, but it seems that bug nr. 2 occurs when I do NOT place a check at "Automatically Synchronize".
And when I DO place a check, the behaviour described at 3 happens.

Pamela:
Thank you for your fantastic bugs!
1. We can fix that without much effort.
2. We're working on that. ;)
3. By chance was there another spouse by that name? I need to better understand why that occurred.
4. Do you have any names specifically where this occurred?
5. Again, can you provide some names?
6. Great find. Will look into it.
7. Would you rather she have no surname then?
We'll work on the dates. That shouldn't be a concern at all. I'll log a ticket for each and get on them first of next week. Thank you.

Dimitri:
1&2: Where are you located? Perhaps the failure is due to latency to our server. If that's the case we need to increase our timeout times.
3: We actually realized we have one small bug where if you start a download, but then cancel and soon-after re-start a download the previous download is still running. We will have this resolved in the next build due next week. Thank you for pointing this out.

Windows XP, downloading to RootsMagic...

1. Elapsed time, 10:00, individuals found, 0
2. I canceled the task.
3. started over, reset the items to request...

Same thing happened...I will start over from scratch and keep you posted.

The download of the AS program to my PC (with Windows XP) worked fine, but after that the problems began:

1) My first download attempt from Geni was perhaps too ambitious, aiming at 9 upward and 2 downward generations to a GEDCOM file. This download started quite well, but stopped finally after having downloaded data of 221 profiles. The system calculated the download time to be ca. 2 hrs and 52 minutes, but that had not yet been used, when the process stopped.

2) After that I tried several times to download a smaller batch, mostly to GEDCOM and at least once to the Legacy file format, but none of these downloads managed to find a single profile within 10 minutes. Calculated download times were smallest at around 11 minutes.

3) In my Ancestor for Geni window for history I keep seeing data which has nothing to do with my download history. E.g. the dates of the downloads done earlier are dated May 22, and my first attempts were done today (18th June 2011) so any May dates should not be visible. The supposedly downloaded files have entirely different names from the ones I tried to download - but as I had no success, no history of my attempts was documented there.

4) Then I wondered whether the unsuccessful downloads had left something in a local cache, which would disturb the process. I uninstalled my first install, installed the program for a second time and tried again, but the real download never started.

AS is an excellent product idea, so I'm eagerly waiting for improvements.

Dovy, I have reuploaded my family tree to Legacy Family Tree again this morning. Will try to give more details.
1.) Gerald Dennis Hurd: An alt. Birth and alt Death have been added to the events/facts. They are the same correct dates but no location.
2.) Eric Frederick Carlson: date of birth is correct (4/4/1911) but location is missing (is is also missing in Geni) the death date is listed at 6/27/1911 and the location is just listed as Fox Island.
3.) Frank Waldemar Carlson now has both wives, Hazel Thomas and Aloyse B. Schrap listed correctly
4.) I am still very unhappy that the months are not spelled out or at least a 3 letter abbreviation. Just impossible to tell what the correct dates are.
5.) Children of Norman Ingamar and Anna Walborg (Carlson) Nelson are not sorted in the correct order. When I into Children Settings and Sort, The children still do not sort in birth order. The are sorted in Geni correctly.
6.) I would like to see that Married women are listed with their Maiden names in ( ) and then their married names.
7.) Locations of births and deaths are not longer in Geni? Example: John "Jack" Johan Botnen and Emma Louise McManigle; David Loman McManigle and Jane Wells. (note: I will go back in and make the corrections and try again.)
Sorry to be so full of bugs ~laughs~ I am going to go back into Geni and make sure that the months are spelled out and locations are all spelled out. No abbreviations for States. Make sure that the children are sorted properly.

6/18/2011 at 12:41 PM

Pamela Kristine Hurd I have tried to re-enter the Months, spelled out and they immediately change to numbers. So will not be working on that one yet.

I am located in Barendrecht, The Netherlands.
My ISP is UPC.

Will try monday at work to see if that makes a difference.

6/19/2011 at 1:28 AM

Had it running for close to 10 hours overnight and it seems to have "stopped looking" at 272 individuals (still running; no error message).

A number of "Access denied while trying to download..." in the Status Log.
(Suggest you make it possible to mark/copy from the status log to facilitate bug reporting).

In essence I have tried approx. 5 times but not gotten to the point where I can open a file in RootsMagic. Running Win7.

Attempted GEDCOM. Mine stalled at 271 individuals, with the last few records showing denials. Running Win7.

All subsequent attempts have failed to connect.

My download has been stuck on 1089 for the last 10 hours.

Just started the program.

My first reaction was: WHY are the program trying to send my login name and password to ve.djyq5xp8.vesrv.com instead of geni.com?

I blocked it of course because I only allow this program to communicate with geni.com which the intention is.

6/19/2011 at 6:36 AM

I am trying for the third time...I have created the file name twice, it is not keeping it.

Download of my personal copy was projected at 6.5 minutes...it is finally doing more than the first two times. I never got to anything the first two times except the blue branches...no popups, no status log. However, I had my software open when I started the first two times, closed on this third attempt that is working.

Will keep you posted now that it is finally starting.

6/19/2011 at 7:38 AM

I finally got this to work...258 profiles have taken 59:32. However, after the clock stopped and I got a pop-up that the download was finished, I got 5 more profiles...?? This took a lot longer than the projected 6.5 minutes. I have Windows XP and a 3G internet, saving for RootsMagic.

6/19/2011 at 7:40 AM

Can't find the files I downloaded to import in to my software. I have had enough of this for today. Will try again later.

6/19/2011 at 7:45 AM

Found a folder for Geni download, but it is empty. Apparently the last hour I spent on this was wasted.

Those of you who got this to work, what file type did you import to your software to get the info? GEDCOM? PAF? I don't have a file type of AncestorSync or Geni...am I supposed to and that didn't work either?

6/19/2011 at 7:51 AM

I found the downloaded files in a My documents folder rather than where I had asked to save it.

6/19/2011 at 7:55 AM

Here's a more detailed bug report after a successful download to Windows XP, location Finland. Broadband (1 Mb in). The downloaded GEDCOM was five generations up, one down, incl. documents and photos (no videos).

AS estimated needed download time to be under 12’. Used time was 1 hr 31’.

The downloaded GEDCOM file is 227 Kb with 460 individuals. AS gave a new birth date (31 Oct 1810) for my mother’s brother, who was born in 1913 (exact birthday is not recorded in Geni). Similarly AS created a new birth date for my great-aunt by marriage (1752) instead of the correct year 1893 documented in Geni.

Persons in this download are included up to my great-great-great-grandfather, but many closer relatives (such as first cousins’ spouses and second cousins) are not included. There are 58 unconnected individuals, typically first cousin’s spouses in different generations or nephew’s spouses.

Not all images were transferred correctly. Part of the problematic ones may be text files in less obvious places, e.g

http://www.geni.com/profile/4145655706390053995/events/600000000006...

It is a text which is copied in the Timeline of my uncle under the event “Death”.

AS’s “Recent activity” shows (similarly as in earlier unsuccessful downloads) four times the same events dated 22 May, which have resulted in files paukstys.paf and mason.ftm – they are not my activities, but my own recent activity is not shown.

Russian alphabet was not transferred correctly.

One person’s burial place was changed into her place of residence.

I will report development suggestions in the “Suggestions” discussion.

6/19/2011 at 8:42 AM

Everything seems to have worked fine... I got PDFs but not JPEGs. Notes from the profiles merged in just fine. Dates are fine (I only use number formats, not text entry). Locations are ok.

28:04:50 -- 28 hours and still no file?!?

6/19/2011 at 9:42 PM

Win 7 Home Premium 8 gb memory completely up to date.
I have given up. All the program will do is give error messages that my firewall is blocking (I tried with it off) or my connection is not working but of course it is.
Set preference for PAF. no file created. This program is more alpha test than beta. Every beta I have tried at least would work, this will not

Oddbjørn Olsen:
What occurs there is actually missing URLs from a media migration from Geni. Both sides are working on a resolution.

It should NOT take you that long. We'll get to the bottom of that.

Jenna:
We know the issue and we're working on the resolutions.

EVERYONE:
Your download is not stalling, but rather media is downloading in the background. We're adding a display of what's going on in that regard.

Bjørn P. Brox:
Please read this blog post to better understand how AncestorSync works. Also noted in the webinar.
www.tamurajones.net/HowAncestorSyncWorks.xhtml

Anita:
The database file you created was saved where you choose. The resources (documents/pictures/videos) are stored in My Documents or anywhere you set in the Preferences window visible on the login screen. We'll make this more obvious in the future. Thank you for that feedback.

Nicholas:
I will look into why it's taken so long for your download. It will not take that long in the future.

EVERYONE: Many speed enhancements are coming at the end of this month. Some changes have been made to the Geni API and we're waiting for that roll-out.

Thank you for all your assistance.

The blog talk about OAuth authorization, which means that the approval and login should happen on my computer, not by sending my username and password to your site.

Private User
6/21/2011 at 12:40 AM

That is the whole idea with OAuth, - the user are not giving away any username and password and I definitely don't want to give away login access to a curator account to an external server.

Mike Stangel - We talked about having a console where we can manage approved apps, - what is the status?

It's in the works.. we're crazy busy right now.

Bjorn:
Our arrangements with Geni ensures that your data is handled securely. We use a Geni provided process to authenticate and access an oAuth token. The desktop program is simply an extension of our remote web service.

Bugs found in a download from Geni to Legacy format:

Estimated time 22', spent time 2 hrs 27', resulted in 6 upward generations of 773 individuals.

Bugs:

1. Several strange changes in death dates or birth dates.

2. Legacy interpreted dates coded MM/DD/YYYY systematically as DD/MM/YYYY, which caused many problems.

3.Several individuals have been given a new birth year, 1752.

4. In spite of downloading the broadest possible tree, some spouses of cousins either do not appear at all or have lost their tie to my cousin. The presence, absence or unconnectedness is unsystematic. I'd like to re-empahasize here the "communication network" of cousins and more generally the "degrees of separation" philosophy - we do like to know about relatives who are certainly more than six degrees away from ourselves.

5. Here (as also in a GEDCOM download) it was impossible to find out why only a part of the profile pictures followed, and AS said that many pictures were not allowed.
