Thanks for giving me the links to this discussion. I totally subscribe to historical profiles being public, though there seem to be many who like to keep deceased public figures (my examples are of persons who died during the 20th century) private.

One reason to this seems to be the privacy legislation, which e.g. in Finland says that any knowledge about a person who died less than 100 years ago cannot be made public, unless the person in question was a public figure - and even for such a public figure, we need to keep her/his family's information in the private side.

As I've not followed Geni discussions very actively - has there been any agreement in the discussions about Geni's policy - where should we draw the lines between public and private?

at present the default setting is that any profile that is within the Family-Group of a Geni user (3rd great grandparents, 4th cousins) is PRIVATE. In practice this works out to anybody born after around 1850. Of course this changes from family to family. I have seen Geni users who are in their 80s, or families with really long life-spans. In both cases this pushes back the "border" to around 1800. That is the default.

Of course family members can manually chose to make ANY profile public. Many people make all deceased relatives public, some only starting with grandparents.
