I could use some help with my paternal grandmother, though - family history says her family, too, were Mormon pioneers, but I haven't been able to push past her to her parents. Can anyone help?

Un-sourced info on new.familysearch.org shows Margaret Elva (Cowley) Zukosky mother as:

Kitty Floy Hall (11 Dec. 1892-14 June 1974)

And her father as:
James Edward Cowley(7 May 1878-11 Apr 1940).

Should you not have access to the new.familysearc.org database I can provide you with additional info from it.

You should be able to pick up James E. Cowleys death certificate online for free by using familysearch.org to look at Utah death certificates.

James Edward Cowley's father was James Alma Cowley(1852-1913)

James Alma Cowley's father was Charles Cowley (1800-1875) who was a Mormon pioneer of 1850

I requested to merge my profile with yours a couple of months ago - it would be terrific if you could approve that merge, and it might make your life a little easier, too, as there are a bunch of us who've done a bunch of work on that line already! Randy! Thanks so very much for the info on Margaret Cowley! I have to confess, I don't really know what familysearch.org is... somehow or another I've got the impression that they merged with Ancestry.com at some point? So I've assumed that my Ancestry membership was giving me access to all the familysearch info. Is that assumption wrong? Help! /lol

Thank you. My ancestor, William Wallace Meneray, married Sophia Meneray (Packard) -- daughter of Noah Packard. I think you already picked up the other connection (Elizabeth Scott) who was a Meneray daughter that married John Scott. More than likely, there were other Utah Menary's -- but I am not sure if they were Mormon or not.

I've located an online version of "Pioneers and Prominent Men of Utah" by Esshom, Frank Ellwood. 1,332 pages of pioneer biographies which also contains several 100 photographs.

It looks like there have been 2 different scans of the "Pioneers and Prominent Men of Utah" book.

Below you'll find links to the same page in both digital scans. The yellow tint scan preserves more detail in the shadows of the photographs while the blue tint scan had better contrast. Overall I think the yellow tint scan is better for photographic sourcing.

Thanks for posting the address for the scans.It is nice to put faces to some of the names in my hubbys tree

These online books ( http://www.archive.org/stream/pioneersprominen00esshrich#page/174/m... ) actually have multiple resolution images that they stream depending on your zoom in scale. So if your downloading images and want a higher resolution zoom in a couple of times to take advantage of the higher resolutions before saving the image to your computer.

Letter "A" biographies from Esshom's 1913 book.

I've gone through and made a text version of the biographies of all the Mormon Pioneers whose surnames start with the letter "A" from the Pioneer and Prominent Men of Utah book.

My intent is to do the whole book but cleaning up the OCR scan is not trivial and will take several weeks. Cleaning up the "A"s themselves and comparing it to the original text took about 10 hours and comprises 250 biographies and is 59 pages of single spaced notes of text.

If you'd like early access to these extracted biographies leave me a message here and I'll post the work in progress somewhere.

Although the book itself is a wonderful resource, I've really been struggling with the fact that the page numbers in the index don't tally with the actual page numbers - it makes it very difficult to find the specific ancestors I'm looking for. So I've resigned myself to going through it page by page - and have actually found some great information I'dve missed otherwise!
