We've just added our 3,000 profile on geni.com to the Mormon Pioneer Projects!

http://www.geni.com/projects/Mormon-Pioneers-1847-1868-Master-Project

The project started back in October of 2010 with Brigham Young being the first profile added. Since then we've been adding profiles daily. We hit the 1,500 profile back in December and this week surpassed the 3,000 mark but with an estimated 70,000 men, women and children that came as Mormon pioneers there is still a lot of people to find.

Here is how you could help.

If you have ancestors or profiles that you manage that arrived in Utah, Arizona, Idaho, Nevada or some part of California between 1847 and 1868 there is a high likelihood that they were Mormon Pioneers.

If this is the case I'd love to collaborate with you. Just respond back to this post with:

1) Your name
2) A link to your pioneer ancestor.
3) Make your pioneer ancestor's profile public not private so that others can see it.

1) I'll send you a collaboration request.
2) I'll include your ancestor in the Mormon Pioneer Projects

The benefit to you is that you is the increased likelihood that other descendants will help improve our shared family tree.

Thanks,

Randy Stebbing

I'll start:
Randy Stebbing

Thanks, Randy, this is a great idea! I'm Private User

I have these Mormon pioneer ancestors:

As with Randy, all of the above are public profiles and in most cases their immediate family members were also Mormon Pioneers.

I could use some help with my paternal grandmother, though - family history says her family, too, were Mormon pioneers, but I haven't been able to push past her to her parents. Can anyone help?

Margaret Elva (Cowley) Zukosky (c. 1915 - ?) m. Jay Alton Young (1915-1996)

Private User

Un-sourced info on new.familysearch.org shows Margaret Elva (Cowley) Zukosky mother as:

Kitty Floy Hall (11 Dec. 1892-14 June 1974)

And her father as:
James Edward Cowley(7 May 1878-11 Apr 1940).

Should you not have access to the new.familysearc.org database I can provide you with additional info from it.

You should be able to pick up James E. Cowleys death certificate online for free by using familysearch.org to look at Utah death certificates.

James Edward Cowley's father was James Alma Cowley(1852-1913)

James Alma Cowley's father was Charles Cowley (1800-1875) who was a Mormon pioneer of 1850

My husband comes from a lot of mormons. His tree had got me going in circles with the several wives issue with Geni not reading that.

Alexander Chesley
Sarah Hardy
And many others that I am adding.

Great idea, Randy. I think you already have all my guys, but I'll add them for the record. My Mormon pioneers are:

Malatiah Luce
Ruth Luce
Stephen Grant Luce
Mary Ann Wickens
Wilford Woodruff "Will" Luce, Sr.
Ann "Annie" Luce
Ira Samuel Sutton

Lots more in-laws, cousins, and relatives of relatives but these are my direct ancestors.

Tawny, Sarah Hardy is my 3rd great, I think off the top of my head. I requested to merge my profile with yours a couple of months ago - it would be terrific if you could approve that merge, and it might make your life a little easier, too, as there are a bunch of us who've done a bunch of work on that line already! Thanks for any help you can give ;)

Randy! Thanks so very much for the info on Margaret Cowley! I have to confess, I don't really know what familysearch.org is... somehow or another I've got the impression that they merged with Ancestry.com at some point? So I've assumed that my Ancestry membership was giving me access to all the familysearch info. Is that assumption wrong? Help! /lol

Hi Randy, great idea!
I have these Mormon pioneer ancestors: I understand, money was sent by the Mormons to Poland to pay for the way over to Brooklyn NY and then onto Utah.
Isaac Steres
Wm. Goldenberg
Leah Goldenberg
Louis Freidman
Bessie (Goldenberg) Freidman
Morris Freidman
Max Freidman
Mary (Goldenberg)Saltzman
Bertha Saltzman

All of the above are public profiles and in most cases their immediate family members were also Mormon Pioneers.

Tawny McCoy , your version of Alexander Chesley has now been merged with a master profile for the same person. You can view the combined results here:

Alexander Philip Chesley

You are now a co-manager of the new combined profiles.

There is a collection of some wonderful Mormon pioneer photographs here:

http://content.lib.utah.edu/cdm4/results.php?CISOOP1=exact&CISO...

Wow! Thanks, Randy. The Utah State Archives also has a beautiful collection of photographs but I've never been able to find anything from them online.

Thank you. My ancestor, William Wallace Meneray, married Sophia Meneray (Packard) -- daughter of Noah Packard. I think you already picked up the other connection (Elizabeth Scott) who was a Meneray daughter that married John Scott. More than likely, there were other Utah Menary's -- but I am not sure if they were Mormon or not.

Charles Mobraten

Can you please change William Henry Meneray (also Menary) from a "private" to a "public" profile for me?

A video on how to do this can be viewed here:

http://www.geni.com/blog/how-to-make-a-profile-public/

I've located an online version of "Pioneers and Prominent Men of Utah" by Esshom, Frank Ellwood. 1,332 pages of pioneer biographies which also contains several 100 photographs.

http://www.archive.org/details/pioneersprominen00esshrich

http://www.archive.org/stream/pioneersprominen00esshrich/pioneerspr...

It looks like there have been 2 different scans of the "Pioneers and Prominent Men of Utah" book.

Below you'll find links to the same page in both digital scans. The yellow tint scan preserves more detail in the shadows of the photographs while the blue tint scan had better contrast. Overall I think the yellow tint scan is better for photographic sourcing.

Yellow Tint:

Blue Tint:

--Randy

Thanks for posting the address for the scans. It is nice to put faces to some of the names in my hubbys tree

These online books ( http://www.archive.org/stream/pioneersprominen00esshrich#page/174/m... ) actually have multiple resolution images that they stream depending on your zoom in scale. So if your downloading images and want a higher resolution zoom in a couple of times to take advantage of the higher resolutions before saving the image to your computer.

Letter "A" biographies from Esshom's 1913 book.

I've gone through and made a text version of the biographies of all the Mormon Pioneers whose surnames start with the letter "A" from the Pioneer and Prominent Men of Utah book.

My intent is to do the whole book but cleaning up the OCR scan is not trivial and will take several weeks. Cleaning up the "A"s themselves and comparing it to the original text took about 10 hours and comprises 250 biographies and is 59 pages of single spaced notes of text.

If you'd like early access to these extracted biographies leave me a message here and I'll post the work in progress somewhere.

Wow, Randy, that's one hecka huge job. Thanks so much for what you're doing!

Although the book itself is a wonderful resource, I've really been struggling with the fact that the page numbers in the index don't tally with the actual page numbers - it makes it very difficult to find the specific ancestors I'm looking for. So I've resigned myself to going through it page by page - and have actually found some great information I'dve missed otherwise!

Thanks again for all your work.

Going page by page is very insight.learned a few things thanks

Yeah, it's been very interesting, Tawny! I've learned a few things that way, too. I wouldn't have done it if I didn't feel I had no other choice, but I may try it again in the future!

@joseph c. kingsbury moved west into Utah in 1847

Donald S. Nothem

Thanks for posting the info about:

Joseph Corrodon Kingsbury

I found an electronic version of his diary "written in his own hand" in the 1840's. What a neat thing to have for your ancestor. Here is a link:
http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/Diaries&am...

Or you can read a typescript of it here:
http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/Diaries...

And it looks like a daughter of his married into the family of my ancestors the Lewis family so we may be distantly related:)

--Randy

Looks like we all have a connection, I wish I would have know when I was stationed out on the West Coast, I passed thru Salt Lake City a few times without knowning

Donald, you and I are 10th cousins through a Mormon connection!

Thats pretty cool, I didn't even start looking into this until this winter when I googled my fathers side.

Throguh the mormon connection Jennfer you are my husband's fourth cousin once removed. It is so amzing to see how everyone is connected one way or a another through someone by marriage or family.:)

Wow, fourth cousin? That's pretty close! It is amazing, isn't it? Maybe there'd be a whole lot more getting along in this world if everyone could see how we're all connected! ;)

I ran across this journal entry of 18 year old Langley Bailey's description of his story as a Mormon pioneer. Truly amazing. You can read an excerpt from his journal on his profile:
