Some of my family members have brought to my attention and are alarmed by how much information is available currently in a Google search of their name. Even if they mark a lot of their profile private, their immediate family members are listed with photos, if they are included on the family members' profiles. Maiden name information is freely available. Even if a profile is marked private user, a sibling may have their name in their profile, unless they, too, are a private user.
I think that in the past, this amount of information was not available publicly. Is there a way that Geni can restrict the family information available on these Google searches and also block use of the profile photo, which may have other family members in it?
Ann Fuller (c) Don't do such Google search from computer where some of the browser is or was logged into Geni.
For true results use separate computer.
Thank you. I realize that you have to log out of Geni to see how the google search would come up for the public. Doing that doesn't get rid of the listing and photos of the immediate family unless someone makes themselves a private user. I think Geni should have an option in privacy settings to hide the immediate family. This would of course make it harder to figure out whether someone is related or not, but it would protect a person's privacy better.

Immediate family can be hidden - it has no effect on tree view and it doesn't remove connections. Hidden immediate family members' names will not be shown in search results (to everyone, including your own family).

Here you can remove Profile Photo & Current Location of profiles you manage from showing in search results.
Liivi - wow! How long has that been available? I never saw it before. Used the link you gave - then searched for a goodly while before finding where it is from the profile. In case anyone else hasn't found it: go to your profile, go down to "Immediate family" -- directly under that label, to right of its telling how many it is showing, are options for "Text View" and "Add Family" and "Edit" - click on "Edit".
Lois, I think being able to hide extended immediate family (ex-spouses/partners and step parents/siblings/children in addition to parents, (half) siblings, spouses/partners and children) has been there all the time. But, you're right, it's not that easy to notice - just have to click on every link available to figure it out ;)
Wondering - what sort of havoc can be caused by folks exercising their ability to "hide extended family" - I see I can not only do it for myself, but for any profile that I am allowed to edit.
Apparently, I can cause folks with claimed profiles (as well as unclaimed) to not turn up on searches of their siblings or parents, etc. Is this really good? Can somebody run by me the good and the bad of doing this? Not sure to what extent it is cool to play with it.
