Dear Fellow Rizal enthusiasts (see below for full distribution list). By now, you would have received a note from me about claiming the profile of Dr. Jose Rizal (Philippine's National Hero) and how this violates Geni's terms of use. I can understand how Rizal's genealogy captures the interest of many Filipinos and how Geni can effectively display his tree for educational purposes.

I hope you would consider helping us "fix" the connections and merge your data into a MASTER PROFILE (Dr. Jose Rizal). Your efforts would be more valuable if put into say, helping collect supporting documents.

If we do not hear from you within a reasonable time, we will assume you have lost interest and would not mind the deletion of your account

Thanks!

In the same light, the following are claimed profiles for Rizal's eldest sibling, Saturnina Rizal-Hidalgo and the profile owner's last date online. They have also been notified of the abovementioned options:

I also sent a note to whoever claimed the profile for Rizal's father: Francisco Mercado Rizal. Last online, 25 Apr 2011.

It's really hard to do merges, especially if the manager of the profile doesn't respond within a reasonable amount of time. :(

I share your frustration, Jerome. Sadly, the only recourse is to create and manage a good, clean tree and let others who would like to join merge at their convenience. Over the time I have been curating, I have come across people who do not want to collaborate and would just like to keep their tree private, even if a public version exists.

I wrote each of the above claimed profiles personally; but did not hear from anyone. I have recommended the closure of the accounts considering they are claimed historical profiles. I will wait for the post-crash excitement to die down before making a follow-up with Geni support. :)

Just my two cents worth...the tree MIGHT have been a priority before but no longer is. I have some family members who just looked at the tree once & that was it! Others take about 2-3 months before looking at it again. Also, family members are complaining about the geni emails they get.

Thanks for the note, Louie! As a non-family member, my interest is scholarly more than anything else, for this and the others I tend to.

As a curator, it is part of the job description to merge and fix relationships, so I apologize for the updates you may be getting from profiles I merge (there's a ton, I know).

This is easy to remedy though. Please advise your relatives with burdened emails to go to the upper right ACCOUNT > ACCOUNT SETTINGS > NOTIFICATIONS. Each user can personalize what is delivered into their mailboxes. :)

Thanks for your interest. I just need everyone to standardize use of First names, Middle , Maiden and Last names. Unfortunately, a lot of data were complicated due to use of nicknames, the computer will not recognize this person as same.

@Mona...Thanks! It must be a difficult job!
@Antonio...That is so true & that's also a problem I have. I put the complete name in the info part but I use the nickname for others to see. I'll give it some thought...if I should change. I also put down the maiden names of the women to show the real line.

Private User, Private User. I can help you standardize the names, as soon as the errant profiles are expunged. Given recent changes made by Geni on editing rights of non-PROs, I would like to extend my assistance to those who are working on Filipino public profiles.

Filipino naming conventions are straightforward with some exceptions. Let me know if you think of others ...

...Except for women's names. It is a standard to use maiden names. Adding the married name into the a woman's name (hyphenation) poses complications when she marries multiple times. When the father's name is moved to the "Middle Name" field, we run the risk of "losing" her mother's maiden name. Geni added the "Maiden Name" field only to accommodate the needs of researchers working on profiles from earlier generations or unique localities, where the mother's surname is not the middle name (not the case for us) and is a clue to the person's origins. Personally, I do not use this field because it messes up my records when I download a tree into a local gedcom file.

... Except for male suffixes. There is a field for suffix; but I prefer to differentiate using the mother's maiden name.

... Except for nicknames. I admit, this can come in handy when differentiating Sr. vs Jr. vs. III etc. Officially this should go into the "Nickname" field. Now, I add this as part of the "Display" field.

... Except for the titles. Some folks like adding "Don" and "Dona". While the prefix ceased to have titular meaning in the Philippines by about the 1700s in the Philippines, I guess people like the allusions to social prominence. :D

... Except for those using Spanish naming conventions. As you know the middle name comes after the "y", but I still see that merged with the surname. This also makes merging difficult.

The "Display" field has worked as a perfect solution for some of my naming difficulties. I use standard naming conventions on the actual profiles; but I accommodate personal preferences in naming by using that field.
