Hello,
I merged some profiles in my tree with profiles from other trees, the result isn't what i wanted ( i wanted to merge people in my tree)
Can anybody tell me hoe to unmerge?
I hope someone can help.
greetings
Benjamin

Nathanaël,
you can NOT yet undo a merge.

You have to do it manually. Add an indentical twin of the merged profile and dirstribute parents, spouses and children to separate the trees again.

We didn't authorize merging with anyone. Someone just decided to merge into our tree and apparently, that's allowed! We now have four and five duplicates of some of our ancestors, all in horizontal rows and occupying a lot of space.

We have a lot of our own information to add in these "duplicate areas" and have problems doing so because of the clutter.

Bjorn, would you please explain in more detail how to get rid of all of my duplicates. We would appreciate it.

@Bjorn I merged the surrounding Non-Donald Cook profiles just now so that if he were to start "removing" people then at least the rest of the tree is in tact. And then only his would be considered the duplicates...

Donald, not sure if you want but, if you stop adding Bolling profiles, there's a BUNCH more in the Geni World Tree. You're merged in, and even if you unmerge yourself, you may be merged in again in the future. The goal of Geni is One World Tree. All profiles after your 4th great-grandparents are considered Public Profiles to be merged in the World Tree.

http://wiki.geni.com/index.php/Big_Tree "The ultimate goal of Geni is to create a single, accurate family tree that connects all of our users. Over time, as duplicate trees have been merged together over and over again, the tree has become, quite honestly, a mess. We are fully committed to building the most comprehensive and accurate family tree in the world."

I did not merge you, but I am just letting you know that now you've added Bolling trees and I curate many Bolling and Meriwether trees as they link to Pocahontas. Pocahontas is a MAJOR high traffic area and many, many users request merges even on profiles they don't currently manage, to get rid of the duplicates. You "may" get merged back in via a different area.

Both of you have "deep" trees going far back in popular lines, so it is almost impossible to stay unconnected. The merges could have been done automatically or by a curator who have the rights to merge and edit any public profile.

Geni is not a place for individual trees - the goal have been from day one a world family tree, - but that affects practically mostly historical profiles, - your family group, - out to forth cousin and up to third great grandparents are by default private profiles and only accessible by you and your family members.

I think I'm on the wrong site. I'm trying to develop MY tree for my grandchildren. They want to set trees up for their children and my tree is simply one-fourth of each of their individual trees. And their trees are different. I have a great deal of information to add to my tree. but obviously and not interested in having thousands of descendants of people not in my direct line.

I had planned on suggesting this site for all of my grandchildren's treees but these huge additions would simply make a usable tree impossible. I'm aware of all of the other "Bolling" people not in my direct line.

I don't understand why I need to have all of those duplicates and non ancestors on mu tree. I guess I just wasn't looking for a world tree.

If my fourth ggrandparents and down are private, how did I get the hundreds of people added to my tree from my fourth ggrandparents down - and none above that level? I now have more people BELOW me on my tree then I have above me.

I don't have a tree. A tree is one (or two if possible) people branching out ABOVE. I have a pyramid, not a tree. And how do I even refer to these hundreds of non-relatives below my level in the pyramid? Sixth grandchildren?

Thankfully, I have very little of my tree on this site. I'm happy that I've been slow at adding new lines because it seems when I add one new line I get a hundred people below me on the pyramid.

That you for your time and patience with me but I'm afraid that I'm just not looking for a family pyramid. It won't help my grandchildren to have thousands of non-relatives on my one-fourth of their trees, just simply confuse what should be a simple operation.

Than you again but I'm dropping out.

-D.

I've merged the "deleted account" profiles into their respective duplicate Master Profiles. Nobody could have given him 6th great grandchildren unless someone within his own family group were to sabotage, and I doubt that happened. What he was seeing were the Big Tree and his tree attached to the side by one ancestor that was merged in by a curator a few months ago.

I was wondering on how to unmerge because of duplicates files, but since you can't unless yoiu delete your account and use a new email and only have four greats instead of more than that, but if you want your own private personal tree i suggest you use familyecho.com, but the only reason i'm keeping my tree with duplicates because my tree itself is linked to 2 currently famous singers 1 singer is a bad role model(Miley Ray Cyrus born Destiny Hope Cyrus) is my 8th cousin 1x removed, and the other singer is a perfectly good role model(Hilary Erhard Duff Comrie, the girl who played Lizzie on Lizzie McGuire tv series) is my 12th cousin 3x times removed while Hilary and Miley are 12th cousin 2x removed, that's the only reason why i kept my profile and family tree with duplicates on my family tree.

Correct, if you want a family tree completely under your control than Geni is not the place for that.

However, since the 2011 entries, Curators do now have an unmerge tool! (does not work on merges done back in 2011 - but does work on merges done since August 2014 or so)

How do we use the new "un-merge" feature?

A S - It is not something you or I can do, but Curators can do it.
If you have a merge you need undone - Post a request at https://www.geni.com/discussions/156925 - if possible, include a link to the profile that needs to be unmerged - if not, clearly identify it in some manner. And it might help to explain why it should be unmerged.

Ku'uipo Dillard,
I like Geni for how it is set up, but if it's goal really is to merge everyone's trees, that's impossible as documentation for generations ago is very inaccurately documented and poorly done. Genealogically speaking, you can't have one tree and expect it to be accurate. There will be different accounts on the same person that are totally different and all appear to be valid. I guess I'll have to find a different website, even though I left Ancestry because of their money scams.

Private User - tagging so you are more likely to see above comment, addressed to you

Hatte Anne Blejer - any chance you want to address the comment above?

I’ll add my two cents Barry Abraham Layton

My experience is the opposite, Geni is more accurate than personal sites, for a simple reason; more eyes on.

And accuracy can be established by a variety of tools depending on time and place. Geni is transparent, members attach records, cite sources, write biographies; the more detailed, the more easily understood as “most accurate.” The majority of private trees I have seen do not have transparency in their profiles, so you either “take their word for it” or query them privately for proofs, which may or may not be forthcoming.

The best place to post requests for unmerging is https://www.geni.com/discussions/216411
Curators are always monitoring that discussion
