Benjamin Comings b 1755 is listed as being a Colonel in the history of Cornish, yet the SAR only lists him as a soldier. I wonder if anyone has a reference as to where the Colonel came from.

@Colonel Benjamin Cummings

Benjamin;

Sorry to take so long answering this. I missed the posting with all the changes on Geni.
I'm guessing from your name that you are related to Benjamin. I believe he is my fourth great grandfather, although I still can't find the first name of my great grandfather who is his great grandson.
I put him on Geni on 1/20/2011 and changed his title to Colonel based on the following record:

http://www.familysearch.org/ENG/Search/PRF/individual_record.asp?re...

Another record on that site had listed him as "Capt."

In The Vermont historical gazetteer: a magazine, embracing a history ..., Volume 2 By Carrie Elizabeth Hemenway, the writer tells on page 686 of the marriage in March 1801 of Polly Cummings, daughter of Col. Benjamin Cummings of Cornish, NH. This can be found by going to Google Books and searching for Colonel Benjamin Cummings. Or directly at:

DAR books are a good source of verification of military titles I believe. I have found some of my relatives in the books which list lineage AND rank.

Thanks for the notes! I have been between locations, and only just back online since sometime early in March. :) I am 'Col' Benjamin Comings's fourth great-grandson. Actually, my father named me 'Benjamin' claiming that it wasn't a family name, although since 'Benjamin' there have been more than a few 'Benjamins' - my mom didn't want to use family names.. :)

I'm about 10 years late to this party, but greetings to a fellow 4th great-grandkid of Benjamin's. :) That makes us some kind of cousins--5th? 6th? I am descended from his son Sherman who ran off to Michigan.
